The world is on fire!
And you are laughing?
You are deep in the dark.
Will you not ask for a light?
세상이란 불타고 있는 집인데
어찌하여 그대는 웃고 있는가?
어둠에 깊이 물들어 있으면서도
어찌하여 그대는 빛을 찾지 않는가?
For behold your body -
A painted puppet, a toy,
Jointed and sick and full of false imaginings,
A shadow that shifts and fades.
조각조각 이어서
색칠해 놓은 장난감 인형 같은
그대의 몸을 보라.
거짓된 생각들로 가득 차
덧없이 시들어 가나니
빠르게 스쳐 지나가는 그림자로다.
How frail it is!
Frail and pestilent,
It sickens, festers and dies.
Like every living thing
In the end it sickens and dies.
부서지기 쉽고 거추장스러운 이 몸이란
얼마나 허망한 것인가.
결국 병이 들어 아파서 괴로움을 당하다가 죽고 말 것을.
살아있는 모든 것이 결국 시들어 죽는 것처럼.
Behold these whitened bones,
The hollow shells and husks of a dying summer.
And you are laughing?
보라 저 하얀 해골들을,
눈이 있던 자리가 우묵한 속이 텅 빈 껍질들과
저물어 가는 여름날의 무가치한 외피들을.
그런데도 그대는 웃고 있는가?
You are a house of bones,
Flesh and blood for plaster.
Pride lives in you,
And hypocrisy, decay, and death.
그대는 뼈로 엮어진 집
그 위에 살과 피로 더덕더덕 붙였네.
그런 그대 속에 교만과 위선을 담고 살다가
쇠약해지고 죽어가네.
The glorious chariots of kings shatter.
So also the body turns to dust.
But the spirit of purity is changeless
And so the pure instruct the pure.
왕들의 빛나던 전차도 언젠가는 산산이 부서지듯
그렇게 몸도 언젠가는 먼지가 되리라.
하지만 순수한 정신만은 변치 않으니
그러므로 순수만이 순수로 인도하리라.
The ignorant man is an ox.
He grows in size, not in wisdom.
무지한 사람은 황소와 같아서
몸집만 키울 뿐 지혜는 키우지 못하네.
"Vainly I sought the builder of my house
Through countless lives.
I could not find him...
How hard it is to tread life after life!
끝없이 윤회하는 삶을 통해서
나 얼마나 헛되이 찾아 헤매었던가
내 집(몸)을 지은 님을.
태어나고 죽는 삶에 삶을 밟아가며
그 얼마나 고단하게 살아왔던가.
"But now I see you, O builder!
And never again shall you build my house.
I have snapped the rafters,
Split the ridge-pole
And beaten out desire.
And now my mind is free."
하지만 나, 드디어
내 집(몸)을 지으신 그 님을 보았으니
다시는 님께서 내 집(몸)을 짓지 못하리.
나, 서까래도 끊어버렸고
도리도 잘라버렸으며 욕망도 털어내 버렸네.
그리하여 내 마음은 이제 자유롭네.
There are no fish in the lake.
The long-legged cranes stand in the water.
물고기 한 마리 없는 호수에
외로운 두루미들 긴 발을 물에 담그고 서있네.
Sad is the man who in his youth
Loved loosely and squandered his fortune -
젊은 시절
대충 사랑하고 행운을 탕진하며
자신의 젊음을 헛되이 보내버린 사람에게는
슬픔이 있으리.
Sad as a broken bow,
And sadly is he sighing
After all that has arisen and has passed away.
부러진 화살처럼 슬퍼하리.
비탄에 젖어 한숨지으리.
생겨났다가 스러져버린 덧없는 모든 것들의 뒤에서.
