Which one of us listens to the hymn of the brook

when the tempest speaks.

폭풍이 소리칠 때

우리 중 누가 계곡의 찬가에 귀 기울일 수 있을까요.

Hard is the life for him who desires death

but lives on for the sake of his beloved ones.

죽음을 원하면서도

사랑하는 이를 위해서 살아가야만 하는 사람의 삶이란 얼마나 고단한가요.

As between the soul and the body there is a bond,

so are the body and its environment linked together.

영혼과 육신사이에 어떤 끈이 존재하듯이,

몸과 몸이 처한 환경은 함께 엮어져있습니다.

 

 

Be not contented with little;

he who brings to the springs of life an empty jar

will return with two full ones.

생명의 샘으로 비운 항아리를 들고 간 사람은

가득 찬 두 개의 항아리를  가지고 돌아갈 것이기에

우리는 작은 것에 만족해서는 안 됩니다.

 

 

He who looks upon us through the eyes of God

will see our naked and essential reality.

하느님의 눈을 통해 우리를 굽어보는 이는

적나라하게 본질적인 우리의 실재를 보게 될 것입니다.

God made Truth with many doors

to welcome every believer who knocks on them.

하느님께서는 진리에 많은 문을 만들어 두셨습니다. 

하느님을 믿고 문을 두드리는 이면 그 누구나 반기시려고. 

A poet is he who makes you feel, after reading his poem,

that his best verses have not yet been composed.

시인이란 그 자신의 시를 읽어준 다음

자신의 가장 훌륭한 시는 아직 쓰이지 않았다고 느끼게 만드는 그런 사람입니다.

The tyrant calls for sweet wine from sour grapes.

독재자란 신 포도로 달콤한 와인을 얻기 바라는 그런 사람입니다. 

Who among men can stroll on the bottom of the sea

as if promenading in a garden?

그 누가 정원을 산책하듯 그렇게 바다 밑바닥을 산책할 수 있을까요?

Do you believe you can comprehend the substances

by inquiring about the purposes?

Can you tell the flavor of the wine by looking at the wine jug?

그대는 목적에 대해 캐묻는 것으로 실체를 이해할 수 있다고 믿나요.

그대는 포도주 항아리만 보고서도 포도의 맛을 말할 수 있는지요.

 

From my obscurity came forth a light and illuminated my path.

나의 길을 밝힌 것은

다름 아닌 나의 어둠으로부터 나온 한줄기 빛이었네.

Our souls traverse spaces in Life which are not measurable by Time,

that invention of man.

우리의 영혼들은 인간이 발명한 시간으로는 측정할 수 없는

신성한 생명 안에서 공간들을 가로질러 나아가고 있습니다. 

 

He who reveals to himself what his conscience commits a sin.

And he also is a sinner who denies himself what his conscience has revealed. 

자기 양심의 일을 스스로에게 드러내는 이도 죄를 저지른 것이고,

양심이 드러내 준 것을 스스로 부인하는 이도 역시 죄인인 것입니다.

Poetry is the secret of the soul; why babble it away in words?

시란 영혼의 비밀인데, 어찌하여 말로 입 밖에 내어 소모하고 있나요. 

Poetry is the understanding of the whole.

How can you communicate it to him who understands but the part?

시란 전체에 대한 이해입니다.

그러니 일부분만을 이해하는 이에게 그대가 어떻게 시를 전할 수 있겠습니까.

  

Poetry is a flame in the heart, but rhetoric is flakes of snow.

How can flame and snow be joined together?

시란 가슴의 불꽃이지만, 미사여구는 눈송이인 것입니다.

그러니 불꽃과 눈송이가 어떻게 함께 엮일 수가 있겠습니까. 

 

How gravely the glutton counsels the famished to bear the pangs of hunger. 

굶주림으로 고통을 겪는 사람들에게

배가고파 죽을 지경이 되어도 참아야 한다고

진지하게 조언하는 대식가와 무슨 대화가 되겠습니까?

       

Representative governments were, in the past, the fruits of revolutions;

today they are economic consequences.                                          

과거에는 대리인들로 이루어진 정부란 혁명의 열매였습니다.

하지만 오늘날에 그 대리인이라는 작자들은 경제의 결과인 것입니다.  

A feeble nation weakens its strong ones

and strengthens the weak ones of a powerful nation.  

나약한 국민은 강한 이들도 나약하게 만들고

강한 이들은 나약한 국민들도 강한 국민의 일원이 되게 만듭니다.  

The secret in singing is found

between the vibrations in the singer's voice and the throb in the hearer's heart. 

노래하는 사람의 목소리가 지닌 진동과

듣는 사람의 가슴 속 떨림 사이로 전해지는 것이 노래의 비밀입니다.

  

Love is a trembling happiness.

사랑이란 한줄기 행복의 떨림입니다.

A singer cannot delight you with his singing

unless he himself delights to sing.

자기 스스로 노래 부르기를 즐거워하지 않는 가수는

자신의 노래로 그대를 기쁘게 해 줄 수 없습니다.  

You progress not through improving what has been done,

but reaching toward what has yet to be done.

그대는 이미 이루어진 것을 향상시키는 것을 통해서가 아니라

아직 이루어지 않은 것을 향해 손을 뻗음으로서 진보하는 것입니다.

 

 

The truth that needs proof is only half true.

증거를 필요로 하는 진리는 반쪽짜리 진리입니다. 

 

Keep me from the wisdom that does not weep,

and the philosophy that does not laugh,

and the pride that does not bow before a child. 

눈물 흘릴 줄 모르는 지혜와 웃을 줄 모르는 사상

그리고 어린아이 앞에서 고개를 숙일 줄 모르는 자존심을 제가 멀리하게 하소서. 

Among the people there are killers who have not yet shed blood,

and thieves who have stolen nothing and liars who have so far told the truth. 

사람들 속에는 아직까지는 피를 뿌리지 않은 살인자들과

아직까지는 기회가 주어지지 않아 아무 것도 훔치지 않은 도둑들

그리고 이 시점까지는 진리만 말해온 거짓말쟁이들이 존재합니다.

He is short-sighted who looks only on the path he treads

and the wall on which he leans.

자신이 밟아가고 있는 길과 자신이 기대고 있는 벽 밖에 보지 못하는

사람은 근시안 적인 사람입니다.

Examine your yesterday's ledger and you will find

that you are still indebted to people and to life.

어제의 당신 장부를 조사해보면

당신이 여전히 사람들과 삶에 많은 빚을 지고 있음을 발견하게 될 것입니다.

Tenderness and kindness are not signs of weakness and despair;

but manifestations of strength and resolution.

다정함과 친절함은 나약함과 체념의 징표가 아니라

힘과 결단력의 표명인 것입니다.

Poverty may veil arrogance,

and the pain of calamity may seek the mask of pretense.

가난이 오만함을 가려주고,

재앙의 고통이 겉치레의 가면을 구하게 하는지도 모릅니다.

The hungry savage picks a fruit from the tree and eats it.

The hungry citizen in civilized society buys a fruit from the one

who bought it from another who bought it

from him who picked it from the tree.

야만인은 배가고프면 나무에서 열매를 따서 먹습니다.

현대인은 배가 고프면 나무에서 과일을 딴 사람에게서 그것을 산 사람에게서

다시 그것을 산 또 다른 사람에게 과일을 사서 먹습니다. 

When I planted my pain in the field of patience it bore fruit of happiness.

행복의 열매는 인내의 고통을 밭에 심어 가꾸는데서 맺는 것입니다.

Art is a step in the known toward the unknown.

예술이란 알려진 것 속에서

알려지지 않은 것으로 한 걸음씩 내딛는 발걸음입니다.

Education sows not seeds in you, but makes your seeds grow.

교육이란 당신 속에 씨앗들을 심는 것이 아니라

당신의 씨앗들이 잘 자라도록 만드는 것입니다.

On the scholar who was made of thought and affection,

speech was bestowed.

On the researcher who was made of speech,

a little thought and affection was bestowed.

생각과 배려를 다진 학자에게는 언어구사력이 주어지고,

언어구사력을 다진 연구원에게는 약간의 생각과 배려가 주어집니다.

Enthusiasm is a volcano on whose top never grows the grass of hesitation.

열정이란 그 꼭대기에서는 망설임의 풀들이 결코 자랄 수 없는 화산입니다.

The millstone may break down but the river continues its course to the sea.

맷돌은 망가져 버릴지 몰라도, 강물은 바다를 향해 제 갈 길을 갑니다.

Inspiration is in seeing a part of the whole

with the part of the whole in you.

영감이란 그대 내면에 존재하는 전체성의 일부를 통해

그 전체의 일부를 보는 능력입니다.

Contradiction is the lowest form of intelligence.

반박이란 가장 열등한 형태의 지성입니다.

The believer is led to doubt justice when he sees

the trick of the fox triumph over the justice of the lion.

여우의 계략이 사자의 정의에 승리하는 것을 보았을 때

신앙인은 정의를 의심하는 길로 들어섭니다.

Fear of the devil is one way of doubting God.

악마에 대한 두려움은 신을 의심하는 한 가지 방법입니다.

Slaves are the fault of the kings.

노예란 통치자들의 과오입니다.

The difficulty we meet with in reaching our goal

is the shortest path to it.

우리가 자신의 목표를 이루는데 있어 마주치는 어려움이야 말로

사실은 그 목표에 도달하는 가장 지름길인 것입니다.

In the magnifying glass of man's eye the world looks greater than it is.

인간의 눈이라는 확대경은 세상을 있는 그대로보다 더 크게 봅니다.
