"Be careful not to do
your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them.
If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
사람들에게 보이기 위해
사람들 앞에서 자신의 '옳은 행동들'을 하지 않도록 조심하라.
그렇게 한다면 너희는 하늘에 계신 거룩한 아버지로부터
그 어떤 보답도 받지 못하리라.

"So when you give to the needy,
do not announce it with trumpets,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets,
to be honored by men.
I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
그러므로 몹시 가난한 이에게 베풀 때에는
위선자들이 예배당이나 길거리에서 하는 것처럼
자신이 하는 짓을 사람들에게 알려 명예를 얻으려고
온 동네에 나발을 불면서 행하지 말라.
내가 진실로 너희에게 말하거니와
그런 사람들은 자신이 받을 보답을 이미 몽땅 다 받았느니라.

But when you give to the needy,
do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
so that your giving may be in secret.
Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
그러므로 너희는 그렇게 하지 말고
너희가 몹시 가난한 사람들에게 베풀 때에는
너희의 베푸는 것이 비밀리에 남아있을 수 있도록
너의 오른손이 하는 행동을 너의 왼손도 모르도록 행하라.

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
for they love to pray
standing in the synagogues and on the street corners
to be seen by men.
I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
그리고 너희가 기도할 때도, 위선자들처럼 되지 말지니,
왜냐하면 그들은 사람들에게 보이려고
예배당이나 교차로 네거리에 서서 기도하는 것을 사랑하기 때문이니라.
내가 진실로 너희에게 말하거니와
그런 사람들은 자신이 받을 보답을 이미 몽땅 다 받았느니라.

But when you pray, go into your room,
close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.
Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
그러므로 (너는 그런 사람들처럼 기도하지 말고)
기도할 때는 네 방에 들어가,
문을 닫고 보이지 않는 거룩한 아버지께 기도하라.
그리하면 비밀리에 행하신 것을 보시는
너희의 거룩한 아버지께서 너희에게 보답하리라.

And when you pray,
do not keep on babbling like pagans,
for they think they will be heard because of their many words.
그리고 너희가 기도할 때는
믿음이 없는 사람들이 하는 것처럼 쉴새없이 수다를 떨지 말라.
왜냐하면 그들은 그들이 말을 많이 하면
(자신들의 기도가 아버지의 귀에) 들어갈 것이라 생각하기 때문이니라.

Do not be like them,
for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
"This, then, is how you should pray: "
'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
그런 자들과 같은 사람이 되지 말라.
왜냐하면 너희의 거룩한 아버지께서는 너희가 아버지를 청하기 전에
너희에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지 알고 계시기 때문이니라.
그러므로 너희는 마땅히 이렇게 기도하라.
"하늘에 계신 거룩하신 아버지, 당신의 이름이 거룩하게 여김을 받으시며
당신의 나라가 임하게 하오시며,
당신의 뜻이 하늘에서 이루어진 것같이, 땅에서도 이루어지게 하시옵소서.

Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'
오늘 우리에게 하루를 지낼 양식을 주시고,
우리가 우리에게 빚진 사람들을 용서하여 준 것같이
우리의 빚들도 용서하여 주시고,
우리를 유혹에 들게 하지 마시고,
부디 악한 것으로부터 우리를 구해주시옵소서. "

For if you forgive men when they sin against you,
your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their sins,
your Father will not forgive your sins.
(왜 너희가 이렇게 기도해야 하느냐하면)
만일 너희가
너희를 적대하는 사람이 죄를 지었을 때 용서해주면
너희의 기쁨이 가득한 거룩한 아버지께서도 너희를 용서해 주실 것이지만,
그렇지 않고 너희가 그들의 죄들을 용서하지 않으면
너희의 거룩한 아버지께서도 너희의 죄들을 용서하지 않을 것이기 때문이니라.

"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do,
for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting.
I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
또 너희가 정진(精進)할 때는
위선자들이 하는 것처럼 칙칙한 표정으로 근엄한 체 하지 말지니
왜냐하면 그들은 자신들이 수행 정진한다는 것을 사람들에게 보이기 위해
일부러 자신의 얼굴을 꾸미기 때문이니라.
내가 진실로 너희에게 말하거니와
그런 사람들은 자신이 받을 보답을 이미 몽땅 다 받았느니라.

But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting,
but only to your Father, who is unseen;
and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
그러므로 너희는 그렇게 하지 말고
너희가 정진(精進)할 때는
얼굴을 깨끗이 씻고 머리를 단정히 할 것이니
그렇게 함으로써 너희가 사람들에게는 수행 정진하는 것처럼 보이지 않으나
오직 보이지 않는 너희의 거룩하신 아버지께는 보임이니
그리하면 비밀리에 행하는 것을 보시는 너희의 거룩하신 아버지께서
너희에게 보답하리라.

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where moth and rust do not destroy,
and where thieves do not break in and steal.
너희 자신들을 위해
도둑이 침입해 훔쳐가기도 하고,
세월이 가면 부패하고 좀먹는 재물을 이 세상에 쌓지 말고,
너희 자신들을 위해
도둑이 침입해 훔쳐가지도 못하고
부패하지도 않고 좀도 먹지 않는 하늘에 재물을 쌓아라.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
왜냐하면 너희의 재물이 있는 바로 그곳에
너희의 마음 또한 있기 때문이니라.

"The eye is the lamp of the body.
If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eyes are bad,
your whole body will be full of darkness.
눈은 몸의 등불이라.
그러므로 만일 너희의 눈이 밝으면,
너희의 온 몸도 빛으로 가득 채워질 것이지만
눈이 어두우면
너희의 온 몸도 어둠으로 가득 채워질 것이니라.

If then the light within you is darkness,
how great is that darkness!
만일 그렇게 네 안의 빛이 어둡다면, 그 어둠이란 얼마나 엄청나겠는가!

"No one can serve two masters.
Either he will hate the one and love the other,
or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve both God and Money.
그 어느 누구도
두 명의 주인을 섬길 수는 없나니
그것은 어느 한쪽 주인을 사랑하면 다른 주인을 미워하게 되고
한 쪽 주인을 위해 헌신하게 되면 다른 주인은 내팽개치기 때문이니라.
이와 같이 그 어느 누구도
돈과 하나님을 동시에 섬길 수는 없느니라.

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,
what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.
Is not life more important than food,
and the body more important than clothes?
그러므로 내가 너희에게 말하나니
너희는 무엇을 먹고 마실까하며 삶에 대해 걱정하지 말고
무엇을 입을까하고 몸에 대해 걱정하지 말라.
삶이 음식보다 더 소중하지 아니하며 옷보다는 몸이 더 소중하지 아니한가?

Look at the birds of the air;
they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?
창공의 새를 보라
새들은 씨를 뿌리지도 거두지도 창고에 모아들이지도 않는데도
기쁨이 가득한 거룩한 아버지께서는 그들을 먹이시지 않는가.
그리고 너희는 그 새들보다 더 소중하지 아니한가?

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
너희들 중 그 누가 걱정을 해서
자신의 수명을 단 한시간이라도 연장할 수 있는가?

"And why do you worry about clothes?
See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.
Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor
was dressed like one of these.
If that is how God clothes the grass of the field,
which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,
will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
그리고 왜 너희는 옷에 대해 걱정하는가?
들판에서 자라는 백합을 보라.
백합들은 노동을 하지도 않고 실을 잣지도 않았느니라.
내가 그대들에게 말하거니와 그런데도
솔로몬의 모든 영화로도 그 꽃들 중의 하나처럼 차려입지 못했느니라.
만일 이처럼 오늘은 여기 존재하다가
내일이면 불 속에 던져지는 들판의 풀도 하나님께서 입히신다면
그 분께서 너희를 더욱 잘 입히시지 아니하겠느냐?
오 믿음이 작은 그대들이여.

So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?'
or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
그러므로 (열심히 돈을 모으지 않는다면)
우리가 무엇을 먹을 수 있을까? 무엇을 마실 수 있을까?
무엇을 입을 수 있을까? 라고 말하면서 걱정하지 말라.

For the pagans run after all these things,
and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
왜냐하면 이런 모든 것들은
믿음이 부족한 사람들이 추구하는 것이니,
너희의 기쁨이 가득한 거룩한 아버지께서는
너희에게는 그런 모든 것들이 필요하다는 것을 알고 계시니라.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given to you as well.
너희는 그런 것들을 추구하지 말고
제일 먼저 기쁨이 가득한 거룩한 아버지의 나라와 그 분의 정의를 구하라.
그러면 이 모든 것들도 마찬가지로 너희에게 주어지리라.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
for tomorrow will worry about itself.
Each day has enough trouble of its own.
그러므로 내일에 대해걱정하지 말라.
왜냐하면 내일은 내일 그 자체만큼의 걱정이 있을 것이며
나날에는 그 날에 맞는 만큼 충분한 걱정이 있을 것이니.
