Youth and Hope
젊음과 희망

 

Youth walked before me, and I followed it to a remote field. There it stopped and raised its eyes towards the clouds which were drifting across the sky, like a flock of sheep. Then it looked at the trees whose bare branches were stretched out towards the sky in a gesture of invocation, asking for their foliage to return.
멀리 떨어진 들판에 이르기까지 나는 앞서가는 젊음의 뒤를 따라 걸었습니다. 거기에 이르자 젊음은 눈을 들고서 한 무리의 양떼처럼 하늘을 가로질러 떠가는 구름들을 바라보았습니다. 그런 다음 잎새들이 다시 돌아오기를 바라며 기도하는 자세로 하늘을 향해 발가벗은 가지를 뻗고있는 나무들을 바라보았습니다.

 

And I said : "O Youth, to what place have we come?"
그래서 나는 물었습니다. "오 젊음이여, 지금 우리가 와있는 곳이 어디인지요?"
Youth replied : "To the field of confusion. Take care of yourself."
그러자 젊음이 대답했습니다. "우리는 혼돈의 들판에 와있으니, 자신을 잘 지키도록 하세요."
Then I cried out : "Let us leave without delay, this place frightens me."
그 말에 나는 비명을 지르며 말했습니다. "우리 지체 없이 이곳을 떠나도록 합시다. 이 곳은 제겐 너무 섬뜩하니까요."
But Youth objected : "Be patient, for it is from doubt that knowledge is born."
그러나 젊음은 내 제안을 거부하고 이렇게 말했습니다. "참도록 하십시오. 앎의 탄생은 의심으로부터 비롯되니까요."
Then, as I looked round, I saw a graceful silhouette coming towards us. I asked : "Who is this woman?"
얼마 후, 내가 주위를 둘러보고 있을 때, 나는 어렴풋한 윤곽만 보이는 우아한 한 여인이 우리를 향해 다가오고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그래서 나는 물었습니다. "이 여인은 누구인가요?"
And Youth replied : "It is Melpomene, daughter of Zeus and Muse of Tragedy."
"But, fortunate Youth," I cried, "what can Tragedy want of me while you are beside me?"
그러자 젊음이 대답했습니다. "이 여인은 제우스 신의 따님이신 멜포메네로 비극의 여신이기도 하지요." 그 말에 깜짝 놀란 나는 이렇게 소리쳤습니다. "하지만, 행운을 가져다주는 젊음이여, 당신이 내 곁에 있는 동안에 비극이 나에게 바랄 것이 무엇이 있단 말인가요?"
And Youth answered me : "She has come in order to show you the earth and its afflictions, for he who has never looked at suffering cannot claim to see joy."
그러자 젊음은 나에게 이렇게 말했습니다. "그녀는 당신에게 이 세상과 이 세상의 고통에 대해 보여주기 위해 온 것이랍니다. 왜냐하면 한번도 고통과 마주하지 않은 사람은 기쁨을 요구할 자격도 없으니까요."

 

Then the spirit covered my eyes with his hand. And when he withdrew it, Youth had gone. I remained alone, divested of any earthly clothing. I called out : "O you Daughter of Zeus, where then has Youth gone?"
그런 후에 그 (젊음의) 정령은 자신의 손으로 내 눈을 가렸습니다. 그리고 손을 거두었을 때 젊음은 이미 가버린 후였습니다. 나는 지상의 옷을 빼앗긴 채 홀로 남겨졌던 것입니다. 그래서 나는 소리쳤습니다. "오 제우스 신의 따님이시여, 젊음은 도대체 어디로 가버렸나요?"

 

Melpomene said not a word, but she took me under her wings and transported me to the summit of a high mountain. Below me I saw the earth and all that it contains. It lay open like the pages of a book, on which the secrets of the universe were surely printed. I remained with the young girl, full of fear, reflecting on the mystery of Man and attempting to decipher the symbols of Life.
그러나 비극의 여신 멜포메데는 단 한마디의 말도 없이, 나를 자신의 날개 밑에 파묻고서 높은 산 정상으로 나를 데리고 날아갔습니다. 가는 도중에 나는 내 아래로 대지와 대지가 품고있는 모든 것들을 보았습니다. 그것들은 우주의 비밀들이 분명하게 인쇄된 책의 책장들처럼 펼쳐진 채 놓여 있었습니다. 그 젊은 여신과 함께 남겨지게 되자, 나는 두려움이 가득하여, 인간에 대한 신비를 돌이켜 생각하며, 인생의 상징들의 의미를 해독해보려고 애썼습니다.

 

 

 

And I saw overwhelming things.
그리고 나는 당혹함을 감추지 못하는 일들을 보았습니다.
On the earth the angels of happiness were struggling with the demons of unhappiness. Standing among them I saw Man, torn apart sometimes by hope, sometimes by despair.
지상에서는 행복의 천사들이 불행의 악마들과 서로 뒤섞여 싸움을 하고 있었습니다. 나는 그들 사이에 인간이 서서 때로는 희망에 때로는 절망에 갈가리 찢겨나가고 있는 것을 보았습니다.

 

I saw love and hate playing with the heart of man, love hiding from him his guilt and intoxicating him with the wine of submission, adoration, and flattery, while hate incited him to defiance, stopped his ears, and made his eyes blind to the truth.
나는 사랑과 미움이 인간의 마음을 가지고 노는 것을 보았습니다. 사랑은 순종과 숭배와 아첨의 포도주로 인간을 취하게 하여 인간으로부터 자신의 죄를 감추고 있는 반면, 미움은 인간이 분노를 일으키도록 선동하여, 그의 귀를 막은 다음, 진리에 대해 눈을 감도록 만들고 있었습니다.

 

And I saw the city crouch down over its slums and seize the clothing of Adam's son. And in the distance the compassionate fields wept over the sorrow of Man.
그리고 나는 도시가 도시의 빈민굴들 위에 웅크리고 앉아, 아담의 아들의 옷을 움켜쥐는 것을 보았습니다. 그리고 저 멀리서 자비로운 들판들이 인간에 대한 슬픔으로 눈물을 흘리는 것을 보았습니다.

 

I saw priests with raging mouths who resembled crafty foxes, and I saw false Messiahs trying to obtain the happiness of man while conspiring against him.
나는 교활한 여우를 닮은 성직자들이 미친 듯이 날뛰는 것을 보았습니다. 그리고 거짓 구세주들이 성직자들과 공모하여 인간의 행복을 자신들의 손에 넣으려고 애쓰는 것을 보았습니다.

 

And I saw preachers raise their eyes to the sky, with a gesture of adoration, while at the same time their hearts were buried deep in the tombs of greed.
그리고 나는 설교자(전도사)들이 그들의 눈을 하늘로 향하고서 신에 대해 숭배의 몸짓을 하는 것을 보았습니다. 그러는 동안에도 같은 시간 그들의 마음은 탐욕으로 인해 무덤들 속에 깊이 파묻혀 있었습니다.

 

I saw religion bury itself in books, and doubt rob it of its place.
나는 종교가 그 스스로를 책 속에 묻어버리고, 의심이 그 자리를 빼앗아 종교를 대신하여 그 자리를 차지하고 있는 것을 보았습니다.

 

And I saw man call to wisdom to aid him with deliverance and I saw wisdom show itself insensitive to his appeals, for he had looked upon it with disdain when it had spoken to him in the streets of the city.
그리고 나는 인간이 자신을 해방시켜 달라고 지혜에게 도움을 청하는 것을 보았습니다. 그리고 나는 지혜가 인간의 애원에 대해 스스로 무감각한 반응을 보이는 것을 보았습니다. 그것은 지혜가 도시의 거리에서 인간에게 말을 걸었을 때, 인간이 지혜를 경멸하며 얕보았기 때문입니다.

 

I saw man conceal his cowardice beneath the mantle of patience, call laziness tolerance, and fear, courtesy.
나는 인간이 게으름을 관용이라 부르고 두려움을 공손함이라 부르면서 자신의 비겁함을 인내라는 미명의 껍질 아래 숨기는 것을 보았습니다.

 

And I saw a young man trying to seduce the heart of a young girl with tender words, while the true feelings of both were half asleep and they were very far from their divine nature.
그리고 나는 한 젊은이가 달콤한 말들로 젊은 처녀의 가슴을 유혹하여 농락하려는 것을 보았습니다. 그러나 그 두 사람의 진실한 감정은 선잠에 든 채였고, 그런 그들은 신성한 성품과는 아득히 멀리 떨어져 있었습니다.

 

I saw two lovers, and the woman seemed to be like a lute held by a man who did not know how to play it and created only discordant sounds.
나는 한 쌍의 연인을 보았습니다. 하지만 그 여인은 그것을 어떻게 연주해야하는지를 몰라 귀에 거슬리는 소리만을 내는 남자의 손에 들린 악기 같아 보였습니다.

 

And I saw lawmakers in idle discussion, selling their wares on the steps of deceit and hypocrisy.
그리고 나는 입법자(국회의원)들이 한가롭게 잡담을 나누며, 사기와 위선의 계단들 위에 올라서서 그들의 상품을 팔고있는 것을 보았습니다.

 

I saw liberty walking alone and knocking on doors to ask for shelter, without anyone listening to those appeals.
나는 자유가 쉴 곳을 청하며 집집마다 문을 두드리며 홀로 걷고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 하지만 그 어느 누구도 그러한 요청에 귀를 기울이지 않았습니다.

 

I saw prodigality advancing in majestic fashion and I saw the crowd acclaim it as liberty.
나는 방탕함이 위엄 있는 옷을 차려입고 당당하게 나아가자 군중들이 방탕함을 자유로 알아 갈채를 보내며 환호하는 것을 보았습니다.

 

And I saw physicians playing with innocent and credulous souls.
그리고 나는 의사들이 순진하고 남을 잘 믿는 영혼들을 가지고 노는 것을 보았습니다.

 

I saw the ignorant man and the wise man, seated side by side, elevating their past to the throne of fame, embellishing their present with the clothing of abundance, and preparing for the future a couch of luxuriousness.
나는 무지한 자가 지혜로운 자와 나란히 자리하고 앉아, 그들의 과거를 등용하여 영광의 보좌에 자리하게 하고, 그들의 현재를 넘치도록 많은 의상으로 미화하며, 미래를 위해 호화로운 침상을 준비하는 것을 보았습니다.

 

And I saw poor unfortunate men sow their fields, and the powerful reap the harvest, while oppression, disguised as the law, mounted guard.
그리고 나는 가난하고 불행한 사람들은 그들의 들판에씨앗을 뿌리고, 강한 자들은 그것을거두어 가고, 법이라는 이름으로 가장한 압제가 그것을 지키고 서있는 것을 보았습니다.

 

I saw the wasteful man spend his money and the miser turn it into the fish-hook of hate. But in the hand of the Sage I saw no gold.
나는 낭비하는 자들이 자신의 돈을 헤프게 뿌리는 것을 보았고, 수전노가 그 돈을 증오를 위한 미끼로 바꾸고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그러나 내가 본 현자의 손에는 단 한 푼의 돈도 없었습니다.

 

When I had observed all that, I cried out, heartbroken: "O daughter of Zeus, is that truly the Earth? Is that truly man?"
이 모든 것을 관찰하고 난 나는 가슴이 찢어지는 것 같아 이렇게 외쳤습니다. "오 제우스 신의 따님이시여, 이것이 진정 세상이란 말입니까? 이것이 진정 인간이란 말입니까?"

 

In a sad and subdued voice she replied: "What you have just seen is the Pathway of the Soul, paved with sharp stones and scattered with thorns. But it is only the shadow of man, the darkness. Be patient, for the morning will not be slow to come!"
그러자 비극의 여신은 슬프고도 차분한 목소리로 이렇게 말했습니다. "조금 전에 그대가 보았던 바로 그 길이 영혼이 걸어야 할 길이다. 그 길은 날카로운 돌들이 깔려 있고 가시들이 사방에 흩어져 있는 길이다. 하지만 그 길이란 단지 어둠이라는 인간의 그림자일 뿐이다. 인내하라. 머지않아 아침이 곧 오리니!"

 

Then she placed her delicate fingers over my eyes, And when she removed them I saw Youth walking slowly by my side. And, in front of us, Hope led the way.
말을 마친 여신은 그녀의 고운 손을 내 눈 위에 얹었습니다. 그리고 그녀가 손을 떼었을 때, 나는 젊음이 천천히 내 곁에서 걷고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그리고 우리 앞에는 희망이 길을 비추면서 우리를 이끌고 있었습니다.
