"Halt, dwarf!" said I.
"Either I- or thou! I, however, am the stronger of the two :
- thou knowest not mine abysmal thought! -
It couldst thou not endure!"
나는 말했다. "거기에 서라, 난쟁이여!"
"너 아니면 나다. 하지만 우리 둘 중에서 내가 너보다 강하다.
왜냐하면 너는 한없이 깊은 사상에 대해 전혀 모르고 있기에!
너는 그런 심오한 사상을 전혀 견뎌 낼 수가 없다."

Then happened that which made me lighter :
for the dwarf sprang from my shoulder, the prying sprite!
And it squatted on a stone in front of me.
There was however a gateway just where we halted.
그러자 내 몸이 가벼워 졌다. 왜냐하면 그 호기심 많은 유령인
난쟁이가 내 어깨로부터 펄쩍 뛰어내렸기 때문이다.
그리고 그 난쟁이는 내 앞에 있는 돌 위에 웅크리고 앉았다.
그런데 우리가 멈춰선 바로 그 곳에 문이 하나 있었다.

"Look at this gateway! Dwarf!" I continued,
"it hath two faces. Two roads come together here :
these hath no one yet gone to the end of.
나는 계속해서 말했다.
"이 출입구를 보라. 난쟁이여. 이 문은 두 개의 얼굴을 가지고 있다.
두 길이 여기서 합쳐진다. 그리고 아무도 이 길의 끝까지 가보지 못했다.

This long lane backwards : it continueth for an eternity.
And that long lane forward- that is another eternity.
되돌아가는 이 기나긴 길은 영원을 향해 이어져 있다.
그리고 앞으로 나아가는 이 길 또한 영원으로 향하는 길이다.

They are antithetical to one another, these roads ;
they directly abut on one another :
- and it is here, at this gateway, that they come together.
The name of the gateway is inscribed above: 'This Moment.'
이 두 길은 서로 대조를 이루는 정반대의 길이며,
서로가 서로에게 의지하여 직접 기대고 있다.
그리고 그 길은 바로 여기, 이 문에서 서로 만난다.
문 위에 이 출입구의 이름이 씌어져 있는데
그 이름은 "바로 이 순간"이다.

But should one follow them further
- and ever further and further on, thinkest thou, dwarf,
that these roads would be eternally antithetical?"-
그러나 누군가 이 두 길을 계속 나아간다면
- 앞으로 계속 나아가고 그리고 더 나아간다 해도,
난쟁이여, 너는 이 길들이 영원히 마주치지 않으리라 생각하는가?"

"Everything straight lieth," murmured the dwarf, contemptuously.
"All truth is crooked ; time itself is a circle."

"Thou spirit of gravity!" said I wrathfully,
"do not take it too lightly!
Or I shall let thee squat where thou squattest, Haltfoot,
- and I carried thee high!"

"그 진리를 너무 가볍게 여기지 말라!
그렇지 않으면 나는 네가 웅크리고 있는 그 곳에
네가 그대로 웅크리고 있도록 너를 내버려 둘 것이다. 절름발이여.

"Observe," continued I,
"This Moment! From the gateway, This Moment,
there runneth a long eternal lane backwards :
behind us lieth an eternity.
나는 계속해서 말했다.
"주의 깊게 관찰하라! 이 순간을. 이 순간이라는 출입구로부터
퇴보하여 되돌아가는 길고 긴 영원의 길이 뻗어있다.
그리고 우리의 뒤로는 다른 영원으로 향하는 길이 놓여있다.

Must not whatever can run its course of all things,
have already run along that lane?
Must not whatever can happen of all things
have already happened, resulted, and gone by?
길을 달릴 수 있는 모든 것들은
각자 자신들의 방향으로 이미 이 길을 달렸음에 틀림없지 않는가?
그리고 일어날 수 있는 모든 일들은 이미 일어나
그 흔적을 남기고 지나가 버렸음에 틀림없지 않았던가?

And if everything has already existed,
what thinkest thou, dwarf, of This Moment?
Must not this gateway also- have already existed?
그리고 만일 모든 것이 이미 언젠가 존재했던 것이라면
난쟁이여, 너는 지금 이 순간이 도대체 무엇이라고 생각하고 있는가?
이 출입구 또한 이미 예전부터 존재했던 것임에 틀림없지 않은가?

And are not all things closely bound together in such wise
that This Moment draweth all coming things after it?
Consequently- itself also?
그리고 모든 것들은,
이 순간이 그 자신의 뒤를 따라 올 모든 것들을 끌고 오는 것처럼,
서로 서로가 단단하게 묶여 있는, 그리하여 결국은
자기 자신 마저도 묶어 끌고 들어가는 그런 것이 아닐까?

For whatever can run its course of all things,
also in this long lane outward- must it once more run!-
왜냐하면 달릴 수 있는 모든 것들은 각자 자신의 길로
- 또한 밖으로 향한 이 길고 먼 길도 -
한번 더 달려야만 하기 때문이다.

And this slow spider which creepeth in the moonlight, and this
moonlight itself, and thou and I in this gateway whispering
together, whispering of eternal things- must we not all have already
existed?
그리고 달빛 아래 느리게 기어다니는 이 거미도, 이 달빛 자체도,
이 출입구에서 영원한 것에 대해 함께 속삭이고 있는 그대와 나도,
우리 모두가 이미 예전에 존재했던 것임에 틀림없지 않은가?

- And must we not return and run
in that other lane out before us,
that long weird lane- must we not eternally return?"-
그리고 우리는 우리 앞에 놓여있는
이 길고 불가사의한 길로 다시 되돌아와서
또 다른 길로 달려야 하는,
그렇게 영원히 돌아와서 달려야만 하는 존재가 아닌가?

Thus did I speak, and always more softly :
for I was afraid of mine own thoughts, and arrear-thoughts.
Then, suddenly did I hear a dog howl near me.
나는 이렇게 말했고 그리고 점점 더 나직하게 말했다.
왜냐하면 나는 내 자신의 생각이 무서워졌고
그 생각을 뒤따라 올 다음 생각이 무서워졌기 때문이다.
그때 나는 갑자기 내 가까이에서 개 한 마리가 울부짖는 소리를 들었다.

Had I ever heard a dog howl thus? My thoughts ran back. Yes!
When I was a child, in my most distant childhood :

이렇게 개가 울부짖는 소리를 내가 들어 본 적이 있었던가?
나는 내 생각을 과거로 돌려보았다. 그렇다!
내가 어렸을 적에, 아주 어린 아이였을 때 :

- Then did I hear a dog howl thus.
And saw it also, with hair bristling, its head upwards,
trembling in the stillest midnight, when even dogs believe in ghosts:
그 당시 나는 이렇게 울부짖는 개의 울음소리를 들었던 것이다.
개들마저도 유령을 믿던 그 때, 적막한 한 밤중에 나는 개들이
털을 곤두세우고 머리를 치켜들고 떨고 있는 것도 보았던 것이다.

- So that it excited my commiseration.
For just then went the full moon, silent as death, over the house ;
just then did it stand still, a glowing globe -
at rest on the flat roof, as if on some one's property : -
그렇게 그것은 나에게 깊은 연민의 정을 불러일으켰다.
왜냐하면 바로 그 때 보름달이 집 위로 죽음처럼 조용히 나타나,
마치 다른 사람의 것인 양 편평한 지붕 위에 눌러 앉아,
조용히 멈추어 서서 둥근 공처럼 빛나고 있었기 때문이다.

Thereby had the dog been terrified :
for dogs believe in thieves and ghosts.
And when I again heard such howling,
then did it excite my commiseration once more.
그것 때문에 개는 겁을 먹었던 것이다.
왜냐하면 개들은 도둑과 유령들을 믿기 때문이다.
그래서 나는 다시 개들이 울부짖는 소리를 들었을 때,
한번 더 개에 대해 깊은 연민의 정이 일어나는 것을 느꼈다.

Where was now the dwarf? And the gateway?
And the spider? And all the whispering?
Had I dreamt? Had I awakened?
'Twixt rugged rocks did I suddenly stand alone,
dreary in the dreariest moonlight.
그런데 이제 난쟁이는 어디로 가버렸는가? 출입구는?
그리고 거미는? 그리고 속삭이던 모든 것들은?
내가 꿈을 꾸었던 것일까? 내가 깨어있었던가?
갑자기 나는 험한 절벽에 혼자 서있게 되었다.
적막한 달 빛 아래 쓸쓸하게.

But there lay a man! And there!
The dog leaping, bristling, whining
- now did it see me coming -
then did it howl again, then did it cry :
- had I ever heard a dog cry so for help?
그런데 거기에 한 사람이 누워있었다. 그리고 바로 거기에,
개 한 마리가 뛰고, 털을 곤두세우고, 낑낑거리다가
내가 오는 것을 보고 다시 한번 짖다가 그리고는 울부짖었다.

And verily, what I saw, the like had I never seen.
A young shepherd did I see, writhing, choking, quivering,
with distorted countenance,
and with a heavy black serpent hanging out of his mouth.
그리고 참으로 내가 이와 같은 광경을 예전에 한번이라도 본 적이 있었던가.
나는 한 젊은 양치기가 얼굴이 뒤틀린 표정으로
숨막혀하며 몸을 뒤틀고 끙끙거리는 것을 보았고
그리고 그의 입에는 검고 묵직한 뱀이 매달려 있는 것을 보았다.

Had I ever seen so much loathing and pale horror on one countenance?
He had perhaps gone to sleep?
Then had the serpent crawled into his throat
- there had it bitten itself fast.
내가 언제 한 사람의 얼굴 표정에서
이토록 역겨운 모습과 창백한 공포를 본적이 있었던가.
아마 그는 잠들어 있었을 것이다.
그런데 뱀이 그의 목구멍 속으로 기어 들어가
스스로 꽉 깨물려 버렸던 것이리라.

My hand pulled at the serpent, and pulled : - in vain!
I failed to pull the serpent out of his throat.
Then there cried out of me : "Bite! Bite! Its head off! Bite!"
나는 그 뱀을 잡아당기고 또 잡아 당겼다. 그러나 헛일이었다.
나는 그의 목으로부터 도저히 뱀을 꺼집어 낼 수 없었다.
그러자 내 속으로부터 이런 외침이 들려왔다.
"물어버려, 깨물어버려. 뱀의 머리를 물어서 잘라버려!"

- so cried it out of me;
my horror, my hatred, my loathing, my pity,
all my good and my bad cried with one voice out of me.-
그렇게 내 속으로부터 절규가 터져 나왔고,
공포에 질리고, 증오하고, 혐오하고, 불쌍하게 여기는
나의 모든 선과 악들이 내 속에서 터져 나와
그 사람의 목소리와 섞여 절규하는 것이었다.

Ye daring ones around me! Ye venturers and adventurers,
and whoever of you have embarked with cunning sails on unexplored seas!
Ye enigma-enjoyers!
내 주변의 대담한 그대들이여!
과감한 모험가이며 도전자들인 그대들,
그리고 미지의 바다를 요리조리 교묘하게 항해하는 사람들이여.
수수께끼를 즐기는 그대들이여!

Solve unto me the enigma that I then beheld,
interpret unto me the vision of the lonesomest one!
For it was a vision and a foresight :
- what did I then behold in parable?
And who is it that must come some day?
내가 그 때 보았던 그 수수께끼를 풀어주고,
그 고독한 자의 영상에 대해서 나에게 해석해 다오.
왜냐하면 그것은 환상이며 예견이었기에,
내가 그 때 비유 속에서 본 그것은 무엇을 뜻하는 것이며
언젠가는 반드시 올 그 사람은 누구란 말인가?

Who is the shepherd into whose throat the serpent thus crawled?
Who is the man into whose throat all the heaviest
and blackest will thus crawl?
자신의 목구멍으로 뱀이 그렇게 기어 들어간 양치기는 누구이며,
자신의 목구멍 속으로 가장 무겁고 가장 검은 모든 것들이
그렇게 기어 들어가게 될 사람들은 누구란 말인가?

- The shepherd however bit as my cry had admonished him ;
he bit with a strong bite!
Far away did he spit the head of the serpent :
- and sprang up.-
마침내 그 양치기는 내가 그에게 충고하여 외치는 대로
아주 강하게 뱀을 깨물어 버렸다.
그리고 그 뱀의 머리를 멀리 뱉어내 버렸다.
그리고 벌떡 일어났다.

No longer shepherd, no longer man
- a transfigured being, a light - surrounded being, that laughed!
Never on earth laughed a man as he laughed!
그리고 더 이상 양치기도 아니고, 더 이상 사람도 아닌
- 빛으로 탈바꿈한 존재 -
존재 그 자체로 둘러 쌓여 그 사람은 그렇게 웃게 되었다!
그리고 이 세상에 존재했던 그 어떤 사람도 그처럼 웃지는 못했다.

O my brethren, I heard a laughter which was no human laughter,
- and now gnaweth a thirst at me, a longing that is never allayed.
오, 나의 형제들이여,
나는 인간의 웃음소리가 아닌 웃음소리를 들었노라.
그리하여 이제는 하나의 갈증이 나를 갉아먹고 있노라.
결코 누그러지지 않는 그리움이라는 갈증이.

My longing for that laughter gnaweth at me :
oh, how can I still endure to live!
And how could I endure to die at present! -
그 웃음에 대한 그리움이 이제 나는 갉아먹고 있으니,
이제 내가 더 이상 살아가는 것을 어떻게 견뎌 낼 수 있으며,
그리고 죽음을 지금 어떻게 견뎌 낼 수 있으리!

Thus spake Zarathustra.
