제12장 :앨리스의 증언
“Here!” cried Alice, quite forgetting in the flurry of the moment how large she had grown in the last few minutes, and she jumped up in such a hurry that she tipped over the jury-box with the edge of her skirt, upsetting all the jurymen on to the heads of the crowd below, and there they lay sprawling about, reminding her very much of a globe of gold-fish she had accidentally upset the week before.
"여기 있어요!" 앨리스는 순간적으로 지난 몇 분 동안 자신이 얼마나 커졌는지 까맣게 잊고서 소리쳤다. 그리고 서둘러 벌떡 일어나는 바람에 배심원석을 치맛자락으로 뒤집어 버렸다. 배심원들은 아래쪽의 군중들 머리위로 엎어져 여기저기 쭉 뻗어 있었다. 이 광경은 앨리스에게 한 주 전에 둥근 어항을 뒤엎었을 때의 금붕어들의 모습을 연상시켰다.
“Oh, I beg your pardon!” she exclaimed in a tone of great dismay, and began picking them up again as quickly as she could, for the accident of the goldfish kept running in her head, and she had a vague sort of idea that they must be collected at once and put back into the jury-box, or they would die.
"아, 미안해요." 앨리스는 울기라도 할 듯이 소리치고, 최대한 빨리 그들을 배심원 석에 주워담기 시작했다. 머릿속에서 금붕어 사건이 떠나지 않아 당장에 도로 주워 모으지 않으면 그들이 곧 죽어버릴 것이라는 생각이 어렴풋이 들었기 때문이다.
“The trial cannot proceed,” said the King in a very grave voice, “until all the jurymen are back in their proper places--all,” he repeated with great emphasis, looking hard at Alice as he said so.
"재판을" 왕이 아주 엄숙한 목소리로 말했다. "배심원들이 모두 제자리를 찾기 전까지는 진행할 수 없다! 전부 다!" 그는 앨리스를 무섭게 쳐다보며 이 말을 크게 강조했다.
Alice looked at the jury-box, and saw that, in her haste, she had put the Lizard in head downwards, and the poor little thing was waving its tail about in a melancholy way, being quite unable to move. She soon got it out again, and put it right; “not that it signifies much,” she said to herself; “I should think it would be quite as much use in the trial one way up as the other.”
앨리스는 배심원석을 보고 자신이 허둥지둥하는 바람에 그만 도마뱀을 거꾸로 담아놓은 것을 알았다. 그 불쌍한 작은 동물은 움직이지 못하고 처량하게 꼬리를 이리저리 흔들 뿐이었다. 앨리스는 다시 그를 꺼내어 제대로 집어넣었다. "무슨 상관이야." 앨리스는 속으로 말했다."바로 세워 놓으나 거꾸로 놓으나 재판에는 별 차이도 없을 텐데."
As soon as the jury had a little recovered from the shock of being upset, and their slates and pencils had been found and handed back to them, they set to work very diligently to write out a history of the accident, all except the Lizard, who seemed too much overcome to do anything but sit with its mouth open, gazing up into the roof of the court.
뒤집어진 충격에서 조금 회복되고, 제각기 석판과 연필을 찾아 들자마자, 배심원들은 도마뱀을 빼고 전부가 아주 근면하게 사고의 정황에 대해 적기 시작했다. 도마뱀은 너무 충격을 받아서 입을 벌리고 법정의 천장을 뚫어져라 쳐다보는 일밖에 할 수 없는 듯이 보였다.
“What do you know about this business?” the King said to Alice.
"이 일에 대해 아는 것이 있는가?" 왕이 앨리스에게 말했다.
"아무 것도 모릅니다." 앨리스가 말했다.
“Nothing whatever?” persisted the King.
"아무 것도?" 왕이 다시 물었다.
“Nothing whatever,” said Alice.
"아무 것도요." 앨리스가 말했다.
“That’s very important,” the King said, turning to the jury. They were just beginning to write this down on their slates, when the White Rabbit interrupted: “Unimportant, your Majesty means, of course,” he said in a very respectful tone, but frowning and making faces at him as he spoke.
"이건 아주 중요해." 배심원을 돌아보며 왕이 말했다. 배심원들이 막 석판에 이 말을 적기 시작할 때 흰토끼가 끼여들었다. "사소하다는 말씀이시겠죠, 물론. 폐하." 아주 공손하게 말했으나 얼굴은 잔뜩 인상을 쓰고 있었다.
“Unimportant, of course, I meant,” the King hastily said, and went on to himself in an undertone, “important--unimportant--important--as if he were trying which word sounded best.
"물론, 사소하지. 내 말이 그 말이야." 왕이 급히 정정했다. 그러나 혼자서 목소리를 낮춰 계속 중얼거렸다. "중요-사소-중요-사소-중요-" 어떤 단어가 좋게 들리는지 시험해 보는 것 같았다.
Some of the jury wrote it down “important,” an some “unimportant.” Alice could see this, as she was near enough to look over their slates; “but doesn’t matter a bit,” she thought to herself.
그래서 어떤 배심원은 "중요한"이라고 적고, 어떤 배심원은 "사소한" 이라고 적었다. 앨리스는 그들의 석판을 넘겨다 볼 수 있을 정도로 가까이 있었으므로 이런 광경을 볼 수 있었다. "하지만 아--무 상관없어. "앨리스는 혼자 생각했다.
At this moment the King, who had been for some time busily writing in his note-book, called out “Silence!” and read out from his book, “Rule Forty-two. All persons more than a mile high to leave the court.”

Everybody looked at Alice.

”I’m not a mile high,” said Alice.

“Nearly two miles high,” added the Queen.
"거의 3.2킬로미터는 돼." 여왕이 거들었다.
“Well, I shan’t go, at any rate,” said Alice: " besides, that’s not a regular rule: you invented it just now”
"어쨌든 전 나가지 않을 거예요." 앨리스가 말했다. "그건 정식 법률이 아니에요. 방금 만들어낸 거잖아요."
“It’s the oldest rule in the book,” said the King.
"이건 가장 오래된 규정이야." 왕이 말했다.
“Then it ought to be Number One,” said Alice.
"그렇다면 그게 제 1항이었어야죠." 앨리스가 말했다.
The King turned pale, and shut his note-book hastily. “Consider your verdict,” he said to the jury, in a low trembling voice.
왕은 하얗게 질려서 노트를 탁- 덮었다. 그리고 낮고 떨리는 목소리로 배심원들을 보고 말했다. "평결을 내려라!"
“There’s more evidence to come yet, please your Majesty,” said the White Rabbit, jumping up in a great hurry: “this paper has just been picked up.”
"아직 증거가 더 있습니다, 폐하." 황급히 펄쩍 뛰면서 흰토끼가 말했다. "이 쪽지가 발견되었습니다."
“What’s in it?” said the Queen.
"그 쪽지에 뭐라고 써있지?" 여왕이 말했다.
“I haven’t opened it yet,” said the White Rabbit, but it seems to be a letter, written by the prisoner to--to somebody.”
"아직 펴보지 않았습니다." 흰토끼가 말했다. "겉으로 봐선 편지 같습니다. 죄수가 보내는 편지요. 누군가-에게."
“It must have been that,” said the King, “unless it was written to nobody, which isn’t usual, you know.”
"그렇겠지." 왕이 말했다. "안 그러면 아무한테도 보내지 않은 게 되는데 그건 아주 드문 경우거든."
“Who is it directed to?” said one of the jurymen.
"누구에게 보낸 겁니까?" 배심원중 한사람이 말했다.
“It isn’t directed at all,” said the White Rabbit; in fact, there’s nothing written on the outside.” He unfolded the paper as he spoke, and added, It isn’t a letter, after all: it’s a set of verses.
"적혀 있지 않습니다." 흰토끼가 대답했다. "사실, 겉에는 아무 것도 적혀 있지 않습니다." 그리고 종이를 펴며 말했다. "이건 편지가 아닌데요, 시입니다."
“Are they in the prisoner’s handwriting?” asked another of the jurymen.
"죄인의 필적인가요?" 다른 배심원이 말했다.
“No, they’re not, said the White Rabbit, “and that’s the queerest thing about it.” (The jury all looked puzzled.)
"아뇨, 그렇지 않습니다." 흰토끼가 말했다. "참 이상하군요." (배심원들은 모두 어리둥절한 표정들이었다.)
“He must have imitated somebody else’s hand,” said the King. (The jury all brightened up again.)
"다른 사람 글씨체를 흉내냈을 수도 있지." 왕이 말했다.(배심원들의 표정이 다시 밝아졌다.)
“Please your Majesty,” said the Knave, “I didn’t write it, and they can’t prove I did: there’s no name signed at the end.”
"폐하, 제발," 잭이 말했다. "제가 쓴 게 아닙니다. 그걸 증명할 수도 없을 겁니다. 그 끝에 아무 서명도 돼 있지 않으니까요."
“If you didn’t sign it,” said the King, “that only makes the matter worse. You must have meant some mischief, or else you’d have signed your name like an honest man.”
"네가 서명하지 않았다면," 왕이 말했다. "그건 일을 더 악화시킬 뿐이야. 어떤 속임수를 쓰려는 의도가 없었다면 정직한 사람답게 자신의 이름을 썼을 테니까."
There was a general clapping of hands at this: it as the first really clever thing the King had said that day.
모두가 이 말에 손뼉을 쳤다. 오늘 처음으로 왕이 똑똑한 말을 했기 때문이었다.
“That proves his guilt,” said the Queen.
"저자가 유죄라는 것이 입증됐다." 여왕이 말했다. "그러니 저자의 목을-."
“It proves nothing of the sort!” said Alice. “Why, you don’t even know what they’re about!”
"입증된 건 아무 것도 없어요!" 앨리스가 말했다. "당신들은 그 종이에 무슨 내용이 써 있는지도 모르잖아요!"
"그것을 읽어라." 왕이 말했다.
The White Rabbit put on his spectacles. “Where shall I begin, please your Majesty?” he asked.
흰토끼가 안경을 썼다. "어디서부터 읽을까요? 폐하." 그가 물었다.
“Begin at the beginning,” the King said gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” These were the verses the White Rabbit read:--
"처음부터 읽어라." 왕이 아주 엄숙하게 말했다. "그리고 끝까지 읽고, 끝내라."
법정 안엔 적막이 감돌았다. 그리고 흰토끼가 다음과 같은 시를 읽었다.
“They told me you had been to her,
And mentioned me to him:
And gave me a good character,
But said I could not swim.
"사람들이 네가 그녀를 찾아갔고
내 얘기를 그에게 했다고들 하더군.
그녀는 날 좋게 말했지만
내가 수영은 할 줄 모른다고 했다지.
He sent them word I had not gone
(We know it to be true):
If she should push the matter on,
What would become of you?
그는 내가 떠나지 않았다고 그들에게 전했지.

I gave her one, they gave him two,

“That’s the most important piece of evidence we’ve heard yet,” said the King, rubbing his hands; “so now let the jury--”

“If any one of them can explain it,” said Alice (she had grown so large in the last few minutes that she wasn’t a bit afraid of interrupting him), “I’ll give him sixpence. I don’t believe there’s an atom of meaning in it.”
"만일 한사람이라도 그걸 설명할 수 있다면," 앨리스가 말했다. (요 몇 분 사이에 아주 커져 있었기 때문에 왕의 말을 가로 막는 것이 전혀 두렵지 않았다.) "전 그에게 6펜스를 주겠어요. 그 시에 무슨 의미가 담겨 있다고는 눈꼽만치도 믿지 않아요."
The jury all wrote down on their slates, ”She doesn’t believe there’s an atom of meaning in it,” but none of them attempted to explain the paper.
배심원들은 모두 석판에다 "앨리스는 그 시에 무슨 의미가 담겨 있다는 것을 눈꼽만치도 믿지 않는다." 라고 적었다. 그러나 아무도 시에 대해 설명해 보려 하지 않았다.
“If there’s no meaning in it,” said the King, “that saves a world of trouble, you know, as we needn’t try to find any. And yet I don’t know,” he went on, spreading out the verses on his knee, and looking at them with one eye; “I seem to see some meaning in them, after all. ‘--said I could not swim--’ you can’t swim, can you?” he added, turning to the Knave.
"만일 그 시가 아무 의미도 없다면," 왕이 말했다. "아주 커다란 수고를 덜겠지. 무슨 뜻인지 알아내려고 애쓸 필요가 없을 테니까. 하지만 글쎄다." 그는 시를 자신의 무릎 위에 펴놓고 한눈으로 그것을 살펴보며 말했다. "어쨌든 난 이 시가 무언가를 말하고 있는 것 같단 말야. '-내가 수영은 할 줄 모른다고 했다....' 넌 수영을 할 줄 모르지? 그런가?" 그는 잭을 돌아보며 말했다.
The Knave shook his head sadly. “Do I look like it?” he said. (Which he certainly did not, being made entirely of cardboard.)
잭은 머리를 슬프게 저으며 말했다. "제가 그런 걸 좋아할 것 같습니까?" (분명 그도 그럴 것이, 그의 몸은 온통 종이로 만들어졌기 때문이다.)
“All right, so far,” said the King, and he went on muttering over the verses to himself: “We know it to be true--’ that’s the jury, of course--”I gave her one, they gave him two--’ why, that must be what he did with the tarts, you know--”
"좋아, 아직까지는." 왕이 말했다. 그리고 시를 혼자 중얼거리며 말을 이어나갔다. "'-우리는 그것이 진실이라는 것을 안다.-' 이건 분명히 배심원을 말하는 거고, - '만일 그녀가 이 일을 계속 강요한다면-'은 여왕이 틀림없어. '너는 어떻게 되지?' -으응, 그래.- '난 그녀에게 하나를 주고, 그들은 그에게 두 개를 주고-' 아아, 이건 잭이 파이를 어떻게 했는지 말하는 거야. -"
“But it goes on ”they all returned from him to you,’” said Alice.
"하지만 뒤에 '그들은 모두 그로부터 너에게 되돌아갔다.'라고 이어지잖아요." 앨리스가 말했다.
“Why, there they are!” said the King triumphantly, pointing to the tarts on the table. “Nothing can be clearer than that. Then again--”before she had this fit--’ you never had fits, my dear, I think?” he said to the Queen.
"자, 저기 저렇게 있잖아." 왕이 탁자 위의 파이를 가리키며 의기 양양하게 말했다. "저것 보다 확실한 게 어딨어? 그리고- '그녀가 변덕을 부리기 전에'-여보, 당신은 변덕을 부리지 않지?" 그가 여왕에게 말했다.
“Never!” said the Queen furiously, throwing an inkstand at the Lizard as she spoke. (The unfortunate little Bill had left off writing on his slate with one finger, as he found it made no mark; but he now hastily began again, using the ink, that was trickling down his face, as long as it lasted.)
"그래요!" 여왕은 격노해서 대답하며 잉크병을 도마뱀에게 집어던졌다. (그 불쌍한 작은 빌은 석판에 아무 표시가 남지 않는 것을 보고 한 손가락으로 쓰는 것을 그만두고 있었다. 하지만 이제 자신의 얼굴에 튀어 흘러내리는 잉크를 사용해서 급히 다시 석판에 쓰기 시작했다.)
“Then the words don’t fit you,” said the King, looking round the court with a smile. There was a silence.
"그렇다면 그 말은 당신에게 맞지 않는구료." 욍이 미소를 지으며 법정을 둘러보며말했다. 무거운 침묵이 흘렀다.
[역자주]왕이 위에 한 말에서는 'fit'라는 단어가 '변덕'이라는 뜻으로 쓰였고, "The words don't fit you."에서는 '맞는, 적합한' 이라는 뜻으로 쓰였다.
“It’s a pun!” the King added in an offended tone, and everybody laughed.
"이건 발음이 같을 뿐이야." 왕이 아주 화난 목소리로 말하자 모두가 킥킥거렸다.
“Let the jury consider their verdict,” the King said, for about the twentieth time that day.
"배심원들은 평결을 내리시오!" 왕이 말했다. 하루동안 그 말을 스무 번도 넘게 했을 것이다.
“No, no!” said the Queen. “Sentence first--verdict afterwards.”
"아냐, 아냐" 여왕이 말했다. "선고를 먼저 내리고 다음에 평결을 내려라."
“Stuff and nonsense!” said Alice loudly. “The idea of having the sentence first!”
"말도 안 되는 소리!" 앨리스가 크게 말했다. "선고를 먼저 내리다니!"
“Hold your tongue!” said the Queen, turning purple.
"입 다물어!" 여왕이 울그락 푸르락해져 말했다.
"그러지 않을 거예요." 앨리스가 말했다.
“Off with her head!” the Queen shouted at the top of her voice. Nobody moved.
"저 아이의 목을 베라!" 여왕은 악을 쓰며 외쳤다. 하지만 아무도 움직이지 않았다.
“Who cares for you?” said Alice (she had grown to her full size by this time). “You’re nothing but a pack of cards!”
"누가 너한테 신경이나 쓴데?" 앨리스가 말했다. (이때쯤 앨리스는 자신의 본래 크기만큼 커져 있었다.) "카드일 뿐인 주제에!"
At this the whole pack rose up into the air, and came flying down upon her: she gave a little scream, half of fright and half of anger, and tried to beat them off, and found herself lying on the bank, with her head in the lap of her sister, who was gently brushing away some dead leaves that had fluttered down from the trees upon her face.
그러자 모든 카드들이 허공으로 날아올라 앨리스를 향해 쏟아져 내렸다. 앨리스는 한편으로는 겁나고, 한편으로는 화가 나서 작게 비명을 지르며 그들을 쳐서 떨어뜨리려고 팔을 휘저었다. 그리고 갑자기 언니의 무릎을 베고서 강둑 위에 누워 있는 자신을 발견했다. 언니는 앨리스의 얼굴로 떨어져 내린 낙엽들을 부드럽게 쓸어 내버리고 있었다.
“Wake up, Alice dear!” said her sister. “Why, what a long sleep you’ve had!”
"앨리스, 일어나." 언니가 말했다. "참 오래도 자는구나."
“Oh, I’ve had such a curious dream!” said Alice, and she told her sister, as well as she could remember them, all these strange Adventures of hers that you have just been reading about; and when she had finished, her sister kissed her, and said, that was a curious dream, dear, certainly: but now run in to your tea; it’s getting late.” So Alice got up and ran off, thinking while she ran, as well she might, what a wonderful dream it had been.
"아, 참 이상한 꿈을 꿨어." 앨리스는 이렇게 말하고 방금 여러분이 읽은 이상한 모험 얘기들을 기억할 수 있는 한 모두 언니에게 말해 주었다. 이야기가 끝나자 언니는 앨리스에게 입을 맞추고 이렇게 말했다. "정말 이상한 꿈이구나. 하지만 차 시간에 늦지 않으려면 달려가야겠네." 앨리스는 일어나 달려가며 참 멋진 꿈이었다고 생각했다.
But her sister sat still just as she left her, leaning her head on her hand, watching the setting sun, and thinking of little Alice and all her wonderful adventures, till she too began dreaming after a fashion, and this was her dream:--
앨리스가 떠난 후에도 언니는 턱을 괴고, 해가 지는 것을 바라보며 그 자리에 조용히 앉아 있었다. 그리고 작은 앨리스와 그 놀라운 모험에 대한 생각에 잠겼다. 그러자 그녀 또한 그와 비슷한 꿈을 꾸기 시작했다. 그 꿈은 다음과 같았다.
First, she dreamed of little Alice herself, and once again the tiny hands were clasped upon her knee, and the bright eager eyes were looking up into hers--she could hear the very tones of her voice, and see that queer little toss of her head to keep back the wandering hair that would always get into her eyes--and still as she listened, or seemed to listen, the whole place around her became alive with the strange creatures of her little sister’s dream.

The long grass rustled at her feet as the White Rabbit hurried by--the frightened Mouse splashed his way through the neighbouring pool--she could ear the rattle of the teacups as the March Hare and his friends shared their never-ending meal, and the shrill voice of the Queen ordering off her unfortunate guests to execution--once more the pig-baby was sneezing on the Duchess’ knee, while plates and dishes crashed around it--once more the shriek of the Gryphon, the squeaking of the Lizard’s slate-pencil, and the choking of the suppressed guinea-pigs, filled the air, mixed up with the distant sobs of the miserable Mock Turtle.
긴 풀잎들이 발 밑에서 살랑거릴 때 흰토끼가 허둥지둥 지나가고, -놀란 쥐가 옆에 있는 강속으로 첨벙 뛰어들었다. 그녀는 3월 산토끼와 그 친구가 끝없는 식사 시간에 달그락거리며 찻잔을 부딪치는 소리와 여왕이 운 나쁜 귀빈들에게 사형을 선고하는 째진 목소리도 들을 수 있었다. 공작부인의 무릎 위에 안긴 돼지 아기의 재채기 소리, 그 주위에 쟁반과 접시가 부딪쳐 깨지는 소리, 그리폰의 울음소리, 도마뱀의 석판 연필이 끽끽거리는 소리, 짓눌린 기니 피그의 숨막혀하는 소리들이 처량한 모조 거북의 흐느낌과 뒤섞여 허공을 가득 메웠다.
So she sat on with closed eyes, and half believed herself in Wonderland, though she knew she had but to open them again, and all would change to dull reality--the grass would be only rustling in the wind, and the pool rippling to the waving of the reeds--the rattling teacups would change to the tinkling sheep-bells, and the Queen’s shrill cries to the voice of the shepherd boy--and the sneeze of the baby, the shriek of the Gryphon, and all the other queer noises, would change (she knew) to the confused clamour of the busy farm-yard--while the lowing of the cattle in the distance would take the place of the Mock Turtle’s heavy sobs.
이렇게 그녀는 자신이 이상한 나라에 있다고 믿으며 눈을 감은 채로 앉아 있었다. 하지만 다시 눈을 뜨면 모든 것이 지루한 현실로 돌아갈 것이라는 것을 그녀는 알고 있었다. 발 밑에서 바스락거리던 풀잎은 바람 속에서 살랑거릴 뿐이고, 잔물결이 이는 웅덩이는 갈대가 물결치는 것으로 바뀔 것이었다. 찻잔이 달그락거리는 소리는 양목에 걸린 방울이 딸랑거리는 소리로, 여왕의 날카로운 외침은 양치기 소년의 목소리로, 그리고 아기의 재채기 소리와 그리폰의 울음소리, 그리고 다른 소리는 바쁜 농장에서 들리는 웅성거림으로 변할 것이었다.(그녀는 그것을 알고 있었다.)-그리고 멀리서 들려오는 소의 음매소리는 모조 거북의 무거운 흐느낌 소리를 대신할 것이었다.
Lastly, she pictured to herself how this same little sister of hers would, in the after-time, be herself a grown woman; and how she would keep, through all her riper years, the simple and loving heart of her childhood: and how she would gather about he other little children, and make their eyes bright and eager with many a strange tale, perhaps even with the dream of Wonderland of long ago: and how she would feel with all their simple sorrows, and find pleasure in all their simple joys, remembering her own child-life, and the happy summer days.
그녀는 동생이 나중에 성인이 되었을 때를 그려보았다. 그리고 앨리스가 성인이 되어서도 이 단순하고 사랑이 가득한 아이다운 마음을 지켜나갈 수 있을지 생각했다. 앨리스가 아이들을 모아놓고 가지가지 이상한 이야기를 해주면 아이들은 호기심으로 가득 차 눈을 반짝거리며 귀 기울일 것이다. 이때 오래 전의 이상한 나라에 대한 꿈도 한몫 할 것이다. 그녀는 앨리스가 그 아이들의 단순한 슬픔을 느끼고, 그들의 작은 즐거움 속에서 기쁨을 찾아낼 수 있을 것이라고 믿었다. 자신의 어린 시절과 행복했던 여름날을 기억한다면......
