I often hear you say that Love is blind, meaning that it can see no fault in the beloved. That kind of blindness is the height of seeing.

나는 그대들이 종종 사랑은 눈 먼 것이라고 하는 말을 듣습니다. 그리고 그것은 우리가 사랑을 받고 있을 때 우리는 그 속에서 아무런 결점도 볼 수 없다는 뜻이기도 합니다. 그렇게 눈 먼 것은 높이 보는 것입니다.

Would you were always so blind as to behold no fault in anything. Nay, clear and penetrating is the eye of Love.  Therefore it sees no fault. When Love has purged your sight, then would you see nothing at all unworthy of your love.
그대는 이 세상의 그 어떤 것도 결점이  없는 것처럼 보면서 늘 그렇게 눈을 감은 채 있을 수 있나요?  아닙니다. 사랑의 눈은 맑고 통찰력 있는 눈입니다. 그러므로 사랑의 눈길은 그 어떠한 결점도 보지 못합니다. 사랑이 그대의 시야(視野)를 깨끗이 했을 때 당신은, 당신이 사랑할 가치가 없는 것은 이 세상에 존재하지 않는다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.

Only a love-shorn, faulty eye is ever busy finding faults. Whatever faults it finds are only its own faults.
오직 사랑이 잘려져 나간, 결점을 가진 눈만이 늘 흠을 들추어 냅니다. 그리고 그 눈이 어떤 흠을 찾아낸다고 하더라도 그것은 단지 결점을 가진 눈 그 자신의 흠일 뿐인 것입니다.

제 34장

ON THE MOTHER OVUM
위대한 어머니 우주의 알(Mother Ovum)에 대하여

MIRDAD: In the stillness of this night, Mirdad would have you meditate upon the Mother Ovum.

미르다드가 말했다. "오늘밤은 적막하니 미르다드는 그대들과 함께 '위대한 어머니 우주의 알(Mother Ovum)'에 대해 명상하고 싶다. 

Space and all therein is an ovum whose shell is Time. That is the Mother Ovum . Enveloping this Ovum, as air envelops the Earth, is God Evolved, the Macro-God, Life un-embodied, infinite and ineffable. Enveloped in this Ovum is God Involved, the Micro-God, Life embodied, and likewise infinite and ineffable.
공간과 그 속에 있는 모든 것은 알(ovum)이며, 시간은 그 알의 껍데기이다. 이것이 '위대한 어머니 우주의 알'이다. 대기가 지구를 감싸고 있듯, '진화한 신(god evolved)',  즉 '매우 큰 신(macro god)'이 이 알을 감싸고 있다. '매우 큰 신'은 육체를 갖지 않은 생명으로, 무한하며 소멸하지 않는다. '내재한 신(god involved)', 즉 '아주 작은 신(micro god)'이 이 알 속에 있다. '작은 신'은 육체를 가진 생명이며, '매우 큰 신'과 마찬가지로 무한하며 소멸하지 않는다. 

Though measureless as human measures go, yet has the Mother Ovum bourns. While not infinite itself, it borders on infinity on every side.
이 '위대한 어머니 우주의 알'은 인간의 잣대로 잴 수는 없지만 한계를 갖고 있다. 그 자신이 무한한 것은 아니지만, 모든 면에서 무한과 경계를 맞대고 있다.

All things and beings in the Universe are nothing more than space-time ova enclosing the same Micro-God, but in varying stages of unfolding. The Micro-God in Man has a greater space-time expansion that the Micro-God in the animal; and that in the animal a greater expansion than that in the plant, and so on down the scale of creation.

우주에 있는 모든 사물이나 존재는 모두 작은 신을 갖고 있는 시간과 공간의 알에 불과하다.  그러나 내포된 작은 신은 각각의 성장단계에 따라 다르다. 인간 속의 작은 신은 동물 속의 작은 신보다 시간과 공간의 폭이 크다. 동물 속의 작은 신은 식물 속의 작은 신보다 시간과 공간의 폭이 크다. 마찬가지로 작은 신이 갖는 시간과 공간의 넓이는 피조물의 범위에 따라 변한다.

The countless ova representing all things and beings, visible and invisible, are so arranged within the Mother Ovum that the larger in expansion contains the immediate smaller, with spaces intervening, down to the smallest ovum which is the central nucleus enclosed in space and time infinitesimal.
보이는 것이든 보이지 않는 것이든, 모든 사물이나 존재를 대표하는 알은 '위대한 어머니 우주의 알' 속에 가지런히 놓여 있다. 즉 커다란 알은 그 틈새에 자기보다 더 작은 알을 감싸 안고 있고, 이런 식으로 가장 작은 알까지 이어진다. 가장 작은 알은 무한히 작은 시간과 공간에 둘러싸인 중심핵이다. 

An ovum within an ovum, within an ovum, defying human numbers, and all God-fertilized  - That's the Universe, my companions.
알 속에 알이 있고, 그 알 속에 또 알이 있어서, 인간의 숫자로는 헤아릴 수 없다. 이 알들은 모두 신(神)의 수정란(受精卵)이다. 나의 동행자들이여, 이것이 바로 우주이다.

Yet do I feel my words too slippery for your minds, and fain would make them safe and steady rungs, were any words ever made safe and steady rungs in the ladder that leads to perfect Understanding. Hang on to more than words and by more than your minds, if you would reach the height and depths and breadths Mirdad would have your reach.
그러나 나의 이 말은 그대들 입장에서는 너무 막연한 것이다. 혹 언어가 완전한 '이해'로 이어지는 안전하고 튼튼한 사다리의 발판이 될 수 있다면, 기꺼이 나의 이 말을 그러한 발판으로 삼고 싶다. 만약 그대들이 미르다드가 바라는 높이와 깊이와 넓이에 도달하고 싶다면, 정신을 초월한 것으로 언어를 초월한 것에 열중하라.

Words , at best, are flashes that reveal horizons; they are not the way to those horizons; still less are they those horizons. So when I speak to you of the Ovum and ova, and the Macro-God and Micro-God, hang not unto the letter, but follow the flash. And you shall find my words as mighty wings to your faltering understanding.
언어란 기껏해야 지평선을 보여주는 빛에 불과하다. 언어는 지평선으로 가는 길이 아니며, 지평선 자체는 더더욱 아니다. 따라서 위대한 어머니 우주의 알이나 가지각색의 알, 아주 큰 신과 아주 작은 신에 대해 내가 말할 때, 문자의 뜻에 집착하지 말고 빛을 쫓으라. 그렇게 하면 내 언어가 그대들의 허약한 이해에 강력한 날개가 될 것이다.

Consider Nature all about you. Do you not find it built upon the ovum principle? Yea, in the ovum you shall find the key to all creation.
주변의 자연(自然)을 생각해 보라. 자연이 알의 원리로 이루어졌음을 느끼지 못하는가? 진정 알 속에서 모든 창조물의 열쇠를 발견할 수 있다.

An ovum is your head, your heart, your eye. An ovum is every fruit and every seed thereof. An ovum is a drop of water and every sperm of every living creature. And the countless orbs tracing their mystic charts up to the face of heavens - are they not all ova containing the quint-essence of Life - the Micro-God - in varying stages of unfolding? Is not all Life constantly hatching out of an ovum and going back into an ovum?
그대들의 머리, 심장, 눈은 알이다. 모든 열매와 그 씨앗은 알이다. 물방울이나 모든 생물들의 정자도 알이다.  그리고 무수한 천체가 하늘에서 자신의 신비로운 궤도를 돌고 있다. 이 모든 것들은 성장의 단계가 각기 다른 생명의 정수(작은 신)를 내포하고 있는 알이 아니겠는가? 모든 생명은 끊임없이 알을 부화시키며 알로 돌아가는 것이 아니던가? 

Miraculous, indeed, and continuous it he process of creation. The flow of Life from the surface of the Mother Ovum into the centre thereof, and from the centre unto the surface goes on uninterrupted. As he expands in Time and Space the Micro-God in the central nucleus passes from ovum to ovum, from the lowest to the highest order of Life, the lowest being the least and the highest the most expanded in Time and Space, and the time required for passage from one ovum into another varying from a twinkle in some cases to an aeons in others. And so the process goes on until the shall of the Mother Ovum is pierced, and the Micro-God emerges as Macro-God.

창조의 과정은 진정 신비하고 연속적이다. 어머니 알의 표면에서 중심으로 가는 생명의 흐름과, 그 중심에서 표면으로 가는 생명의 흐름은 아무런 장애 없이 계속 진행된다. 중심 핵에 있는 작은 신은 시간과 공간 속에서 확장해 감에 따라, 알에서 알로, 생명의 최저 단계에서 최고 단계로, 최소의 시간과 공간을 갖는 최저의 단계에서 최대의 시공을 갖는 최고의 존재로 이행한다. 하나의 알에서 다른 알로 이행하는데 필요한 시간은 순간에서부터 영겁까지 실로 다양하다. 이 과정은 어머니 알의 껍질이 깨지고, 작은 신이 커다란 신으로 출현할 때까지 계속된다.

Thus is Life an unfolding, a growth and a progress, but not as men are wont to peak of growth and progress. For growth to them is an accretion in bulk, and progress, a going forward. Whereas growth is an all around expansions in Time and Space and progress is s motion extending equally in all directions: backward as well as forward, and downward and sideward as well as upward. The ultimate growth , therefore , is the outgrowing of Space; and the ultimate progress is the outstripping of time, thus merging into Macro-God and reaching His freedom from bounds of Time and Space , which is the only freedom worth the name. And that is the destiny set for Man.
생명은 이렇게 펼쳐지고 성장하고 진보하지만,  이는 사람들이 흔히 말하는 일반적인 성장이나 진보와는 다르다. 인간의 입장에서 말하는 성장이란 양(量)을 축적하는 것이며, 진보란 앞으로 나아가는 것이다. 그러나 여기서 말하는 성장이란 시간과 공간 어느 곳에서나 팽창하는 것이며, 진보는 모든 방향으로 균등하게 뻗어가는 활동이다. 요컨대 앞과 똑같이 뒤로도, 위쪽과 똑같이 아래쪽, 옆쪽으로도 뻗어가는 것이다. 따라서 궁극적인 성장이란 공간을 뛰어넘는 것이며, 궁극적인 진보란 시간을 초월하는 것이다. 이렇게 해서 커다란 신에 녹아들면서, 그가 가진 시간과 공간의 구속으로부터 벗어나 자유에 도달한다. 이러한 자유만이 자유라는 이름을 가질 가치가 있다. 그리고 이것이 인간에게 정해진 운명이다.

Ponder well these words, O monks. Except your very blood imbibes them with a relish, your efforts to free yourselves and others are apt to add more links to your chains and theirs. Mirdad would have you understand that you may help all yearners to understand. Mirdad would have you free that you may lead to Freedom the race to those who long to overcome and to be free.
벗들이여, 나의 말을 심사숙고하라. 그대들의 핏속까지 이 말을 완전히 흡수하지 않으면, 자신이나 남을 자유롭게 하려는 그대들의 노력이 자신이나 남을 속박하는 쇠사슬을 더욱 늘릴 뿐이기 때문이다. 그대들이 이해를 바라는 이들에게 도움을 주듯이, 미르다드는 그대들에게 이해를 주고 싶다. 극복을 통해 자유로워지기를 갈망하는 종족들을 그대들이 자유로 인도하듯이, 미르다드는 그대들에게 자유를 주고 싶다.  

Therefore would he elucidate still further this ovum principle, particularly in so far as it touches Man.

그래서 미르다드는 한 걸음 더 나아가 이 알의 원리를 해명하려고 한다. 특히 인간과 관련된 부분만큼은.

All orders of being below Man are enclosed in group ova. Thus there are for plants as many ova as there are varieties of plants, the more evolved enclosing all the less evolved and so it is with insects, fishes and mammals; always the more evolved enclosing all the orders of Life below it down to the central nucleus.
인간보다 하등한 존재는 모두 한 무리의 알에 감싸여 있다. 다양한 식물이 있으면 식물들을 위한 알도 그만큼 많이 있다. 진화가 더 된 것은 자기보다 진화가 덜 된 것을 내포하고 있다. 곤충도, 어류도, 포유류도 마찬가지다. 더 진화한 것은 언제나 아래 단계의 것을 그 중심핵까지 내포하고 있다.

As the yolk and white within the common egg serve to feed and evolve the embryo chick therein, so do all the ova enclosed in any ovum serve to feed and unfold the Micro-God therein.

일반적으로 알의 노른자와 흰자가 새끼를 성장시키는데 쓰이듯, 알에 내포된 알은 어느 것이나 그 속에 작은 신을 양육하는 데 쓰인다.

In such successive ovum the Micro-God finds space-time food slightly different from that furnished him in the preceding ovum. Hence the difference in space   time expansion. Diffused and formless in the Gas, he comes more concentrated and approaches form in the Liquid ; while in the mineral he assumes a definite form and fixity remaining all the while devoid of any attributes of Life as manifested in the higher forms. In the vegetable he takes on form with the capacity to grow, to multiply and to feel. In the Animal he feels, and moves, and propagates, has memory and rudiments of though. But in Man, in addition to all that, he acquires a personality and the ability to contemplate, to express himself and to create. To be sure, Men's creation is comparison to God s is like a house of cards built by an infant compared to a glorious temple, or a graceful castle built by a super-architect. Yet it is a creation nonetheless.
더 큰 알로 옮겨갈 때마다, 작은 신은 시간과 공간의 음식이 그 전의 알에서 자신을 키워주었던 음식과는 조금씩 달라진다는 것을 알게 된다. 이렇게 해서 시간과 공간의 넓이에도 차이가 생긴다. 작은 신은 기체 속에 있을 때는 분산되고 형태가 없지만, 액체 속에서는 더 응축된 형태가 되고 점차 형태를 갖춘다. 한편 광물 속에서는 더 명확한 형태와 고체성을 얻긴 하지만, 더 고차원적인 형태에서 주어지는 '생명'의 속성이 없다. 작은 신은 식물 속에 있을 때는 성장하고 가지치며 느끼는 능력을 지닌 형태가 된다. 동물 속에 있을 때는 느끼고 움직이고 번식하고 기억하며, 사고(思考)하기도 한다. 그러나 인간 안에 있을 경우에는 이 모든 것에 덧붙여 인격, 깊이 생각하는 능력, 자신을 표현하는 능력, 창조하는 능력까지 갖게 된다. 사실, 인간의 창조를 신의 창조와 비교하는 것은 대 건축가가 세운 영예로운 사원이나 장엄한 성채를 어린이가 만든 장난감 집에 비교하는 것과 같다. 하지만 어쨌던 그것도 창조이다.

Each man becomes an individual ovum, the more evolved enclosing the less evolved plus all the animal vegetable and the lower ova down to the central nucleus. While the most evolved - the Overcomer - encloses all the human and the less than human ova.
인간 개개인은 개별적인 알이 된다. 더 많이 진화한 인간은 덜 진화한 인간과 모든 동식물 같은 저차원의 알을 그 중심핵까지 모두 내포하고 있다. 한편 가장 진화한 존재인 극복자는 인간과 인간보다 하등한 알 전부를 내포하고 있다.

The size of the ovum enclosing any man is measured by the breadth of the space-time horizons of that man. While one man s consciousness of Time embraces no more than the brief span from his infancy to the present hour, and his Space horizons encompass no more than his eye can reach, another s horizons encompass pasts immemorial and futures far in the distance, and leagues of spaces yet un-traversed by his eye.
한 인간이 내포한 알의 크기는 그 사람의 시간과 공간이 갖는 지평의 넓이로 측정된다. 그의 시간 의식은 유아기부터 현재까지의 짧은 기간 밖에 포용하지 못하고 공간의 지평은 눈이 미치는 곳 이상을 담지 못하는 반면, 또다른 지평은 기억조차 할 수 없는 태고부터 까마득히 먼 미래까지, 눈으로 도저히 미치지 못하는 광대한 공간을 포용한다.  

The food provided to all men for their unfolding is that same; but their capacity of feeding and digesting in not the same; for they have not hatched out of the same ovum at the same time and place. Hence the difference in their space-time expansion; and hence no two can be found who are exactly alike.
인간을 성장시키는 음식은 똑같지만, 영양을 흡수하고 소화하는 인간의 능력은 똑같지 않다. 왜냐하면 인간은 똑같은 시간과 장소에 있는 똑같은 알에서 부화된 것이 아니기 때문이다. 따라서 그들의 시간과 공간의 넓이는 다르다. 그러므로 완전히 똑같은 두 사람을 발견할 수는 없다. 

From the same board, so richly and so lavishly spread before all men, one feasts on the purity and beauty of gold, and is filled; while another feasts upon the gold itself, and is ever hungry. A hunter, looking at a roe, is prompted to kill it and consume it. A poet, looking at the same roe, is carried as on wings into spaces and times of which the hunter never dreams.

모든 인간 앞에 풍요롭게 펼쳐진 똑같은 식탁에서 어떤 사람은 황금의 순수와 아름다움을 만끽하는가 하면, 어떤 사람은 황금 자체를 양식으로 삼아 늘 배를 곯고 있다. 사냥꾼은 사슴을 발견하면 그 사슴을 죽여 없앨려고 기를 쓴다. 똑같은 사슴을 발견한 시인은 사냥꾼 따위는 꿈도 꾸지 못하는 시간과 공간으로 날개가 실려가듯 인도된다.

Micayon living in the same Ark with Shamadam, dreams of ultimate freedom and the summit of release from the bounds of Time and Space, while Shamadam is ever busy bobbling himself with longer and sturdier hawsers of Space and Time . Verily, Micayon and Shamadam though touching elbows, are far apart. Micayon contains Shamadam; but Shamadam contains not Micayon. Therefore can Micayon understand Shamadam , but Shamadam cannot understand Micayon.
미카욘은 샤마담과 똑같은 방주에 살면서도  궁극의 자유를 꿈꾸었고 시간과 공간의 제약에서 해방된 정상을 꿈꾸었다. 그에 비해 샤마담은 더 길고 억센 공간과 시간의 그물에다  자신을 속박하느라 바빴다. 미카욘과 샤마담은 무릎이 닿을 정도로 가까이 있으면서도  멀리 떨어져 있었다. 미카욘은 샤마담을 담고 있다. 그러나 샤마담은 미카욘을 담지 못한다. 따라서 미카욘은 샤마담을 이해할 수 있지만,  샤마담은 미카욘을 이해할 수 없다.

An Overcomer's life touches the life of every man on every side; for it contains the lives of all men. Whereas no man s life touches an Overcomer's life on every side. To the simplest of men the Overcomer appears as the simplest of men. To the highly evolved he appears as one highly evolved. But there are always sides of him no less than an Overcomer can ever feel and understand. Hence his solitude and sense of being in the world, yet not of it.
극복자의 삶은 모든 인간의 삶을 담고 있으므로 어느 쪽에서든 인간의 삶과 접한다. 하지만 어떤 인간의 삶도 극복자의 삶 모두를 접할 수는 없다. 지극히 단순한 인간에게 극복자는 가장 단순한 자로 나타난다. 고도로 진화한 인간에게 극복자는 고도로 진화한 자로 나타난다. 그러나 극복자에겐 극복자말고는 느낄 수도 이해할 수도 없는 측면이 항상 존재한다. 그 때문에 극복자는 고독하며, 여전히 자기 부재의 세계에 있는 것처럼 느낀다.

The Micro-God would not be confined. He is ever working for his own release from Time and Space confinement, using an intelligence far surpassing the human. In lower beings, men call it instinct. In ordinary men they call it reason. In higher men they designate it as prophetic sense. It is all that and much more than that. It is that nameless power which some have aptly named The Holy Spirit, and which Mirdad names the Spirit of Holy Understanding .
작은 신은 제약을 싫어한다. 작은 신은 인간의 지성을 훨씬 능가하는 지성을 사용해 자신을 시간과 공간의 제약으로부터 해방시키려고 한다. 지성은 저차원의 존재에서는 본능이라 불린다. 보통 사람들은 이 지성을 이성이라 부른다. 좀더 고차원적 인간은 예언자적 감각이라 표현한다. 이 지성은 모든 것이자 그 이상의 것이다. 어떤 사람은 이름없는 이 힘을 '성령(聖靈)'이라 부르지만, 미르다드는 '성스러운 이해의 영(靈)'이라 부른다.

The first Son of Man who pieced the shell of Time and crossed the bourn of Space is rightly called the Son of God. His understanding of his god-hood is fitly called the Holy Spirit. But he assured that you also are sons of God, and in you also is the Holy Spirit working his way. Work with him and never against him.
시간의 껍질을 깨고, 공간의 한계를 넘은 최초의 '사람의 아들'은 정확히 '신의 아들'이라 불리워지고 있다. 자신의 신성(神性)에 대한 그의 이해는 '성령'이라는 이름으로 적합하게 불리워지고 있다. 그러나 확신하건대, 그대들 역시 신의 아들이며,  그대들 속에서도 '성령'은 활동한다. '성령'에 따라 활동하라. 결코 '성령'에 대항하지 말라.

But till you pierce the shell of Time and cross the bourn of Space let no one say 'I AM God'. Say, rather, 'God IS I'. This keep you well in mind lest haughtiness and vain imagining corrupt your hearts and militate against the Holy Spirt's work within you. For most men work against the Holy Spirit's work, and thus delay their ultimate release.

그러나 시간의 껍질을 깨고, 공간의 한계를 넘어설 때까지는 '내가 신이다'라고 말하지 말라. 오히려 '신이 나이다' 라고 말하라. 이를 마음속에 잘 새겨 놓으라. 그렇지 않으면 오만과 허망한 공상이 마음을 더럽히고,  자기 안에 있는 '성령'의 활동에 거역할 우려가 있다. 많은 인간들이 성령'의 활동에 거역함으로써  궁극적인 해방을 늦추고 있기 때문이다.

To conquer Time you must fight Time with Time. To vanquish Space you must let Space eat Space. To play the kindly host to either is to remain the prisoner of both, and the hostage to the endless antics of Good and Evil.
시간을 정복하기 위해서, 그대는 시간과 함께 하면서 시간과 싸워야 한다. 공간을 제압하기 위해서는 공간에게 공간을 먹이로 주어야 한다. 시간과 공간 어느 쪽에게나 친절한 주인으로 산다면 그것은 시간과 공간의 포로로 남는 것이며,  선과 악의 끝없는 광대 놀이에 인질로 머무는 것이다.

Those who have found their destiny and yearn to work it out lose no time coddling Time, and no steps pacing Space. In one short lifetime they may roll up aeons and annihilate stupendous vests. They do not wait on Death to take them into the ovum next to theirs; they trust to Life to help them piece the shells of many ova all at once.
자신의 운명을 발견하고, 그 운명을 성취하기를 바라는 자는 응석을 부리며 시간을 허비하지도 않고, 태평스럽게 걸으며 공간을 낭비하지도 않는다. 짧은 인생에서 공허한 시간 낭비는 완성을 가로막는다.

For that you must be disposed of everything, that Time and Space may have no hold upon your hearts. The more you possess, the more you are possessed. The less you possess, the less you are possessed.
따라서 시간과 공간에 마음을 점령당하지 않으려면, 모든 것에 대한 소유욕을 버려야 한다. 소유하려는 것이 많으면 많을수록 그만큼 소유당한다. 소유하려는 것이 적으면 적을수록 소유당하는 것도 그만큼 적어진다. 

Aye, be dispossessed of everything except you Faith, your Love, and your yearning for release through Holy Understanding.
모든 것에 대한 소유를 포기하고,  '신념', '사랑' 그리고 '성스러운 이해'를 통한 해방을 갈망하라."  

이 글을 읽으시는 분들에게

미하일 나이미의 <미르다드의 서>는 참으로 내용이 아름다운 책임에도 불구하고 1995년 정신세계사에서 한번 출판된 이래로 절판되어 독자들이 아주 구하기 어려운 책이 되어 버렸습니다. 그래서 저는 제가 가지고 있는 책 한권 모두를 하나하나 타이핑해서 여기에 소개하였습니다.

그러므로 저의 이웃님들께서는 이 글은 담아가시더라도 개인적으로 공부하기 위한 용도에만 사용하시고 스크랩으로 블로그에 올려 두시거나 카페에 퍼담아 날라서  저작권 문제가 소지가 일어나지 않도록 특별히 유의해주시기 바랍니다.

제가 올려둔 이 <미르다드 서>의 한글번역에 대한 모든 권리는 정신세계사와 번역자에게 있습니다.  그러므로 언제든 한글 번역에 대한 저작권에 대한 이야기가 나오면 즉시 삭제할 것입니다. 

다만 영한대역으로 된 11장은 저의 번역임을 밝히며 시간이 나는대로 제가 새롭게 번역하여 여러 님들이 두루 이 글을 접할 수 있게 노력하겠습니다.  다시한번 당부드리지만 이 글은 개인적인 공부로만 사용하시길 바랍니다.

WHO SAYS WORDS WITH MY MOUTH?

All day I think about it, then at night I say it.
Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing?
I have no idea.
My soul is from elsewhere, I’m sure of that,
and I intend to end up there.
This drunkenness began in some other tavern.
When I get back around to that place,
I’ll be completely sober. Meanwhile,
I’m like a bird from another continent, sitting in this aviary.
The day is coming when I fly off,
but who is it now in my ear who hears my voice?
Who says words with my mouth?
Who looks out with my eyes? What is the soul?
I cannot stop asking.
If I could taste one sip of an answer,
I could break out of this prison for drunks.
I didn’t come here of my own accord, and I can’t leave that way.
Whoever brought me here will have to take me home.
This poetry. I never know what I’m going to say.
I don’t plan it.
When I’m outside the saying of it,
I get very quiet and rarely speak at all.
