ITwas evening when the youth found himself in the Princess's apartment, He put down his cage under the lamp-stand, bowed himself low before the Princess, inquired after her health, and spoke also on matters of less importance. No answer came.
자신이 공주의 방에 들어와 있다는 것을 왕자가 깨닫게 된 것은 저녁이었습니다. 왕자는 등잔대 밑에 자신의 새장을 내려놓고 공주 앞으로 다가가 무릎을 굽혀 인사를 했습니다. 그런 다음 공주에게 안부를 묻고 별로 중요하지 않은 이런 말 저런 말을 늘어놓았습니다. 하지만 공주는 아무런 대꾸도 하지 않았습니다.

Then said the Prince to the Princess: "It is getting rather late, and you have not yet favoured me with a single word. I will now address the lamp-stand. Even though it has no soul it may have more feeling than you." At these words he turned to the lamp-stand and asked: "How are you?" And the answer came directly: "Quite well; though it is many years since anyone spoke to me. Allah sent you to me this day, and I feel as glad as if the whole world were mine. May I entertain you with a story?"
그러자 왕자는 이렇게 말했습니다. "밤은 점점 깊어가고 아직까지 공주님께서는 단 한마디도 하지 않으신 채 제게 마음을 열어주시지 않으니 할 수없이 저는 등잔대와 대화를 나누어야겠습니다. 비록 저 등잔대가 영혼은 없다하나 공주님보다야 감정이 풍부하겠지요." 이렇게 말을 마친 왕자는 등잔대를 향해 돌아서서 안부를 물었습니다. "등잔대야, 넌 잘 지내고 있니?" 그러자 그 즉시 대답이 들려왔습니다. "그럼요, 잘 지내고 있어요. 비록 누군가가 나에게 말을 걸어 온 지는 오래되었지만 신께서 오늘 당신을 제게 보내주셔서 이렇게 말을 걸어주시니 저는 마치 온 세상이 다 제것인 것 같은 기쁨을 느끼고 있답니다. 그런 당신을 기쁘게 해 드리기 위해 제가 재미있는 이야기를 하나 해드릴까요?"

The Prince nodding assent, the voice proceeded: "Once there was a Shah who had a daughter, whom three Princes desired to marry. The father said to the wooers: 'Whichever of you excels the others in enterprise shall have my daughter.' The young men accordingly set off together, and coming to a spring they resolved to take different directions, in order to avoid any collision with each other's pursuits. They agreed, however, to leave their rings under a stone, at the spring, each to take his own up again when he returned to the spot, thus furnishing an intimation to him who returned last of all that the others had already reached home.
왕자가 승낙의 뜻으로 고개를 끄덕이자 그 목소리가 계속 들려왔습니다. "옛날에 딸 하나를 둔 왕이 있었는데 세 명의 왕자가 그녀와 결혼하기 위해 청혼을 해왔답니다. 그러자 왕은 구혼자들에게 이렇게 말했지요. '모험에 뛰어들어 다른 사람보다 더 뛰어난 기술을 배워오는 사람에게 내 딸을 주겠노라.' 그 말을 들은 왕자들은 그 즉시 모두 모험을 하기 위해 함께 길을 떠났고 이윽고 샘에 이르자 다른 사람이 겪는 모험과 충돌이 일어나는 것을 피하기 위하여 각자 다른 방향을 택해 길을 떠나기로 결정했습니다. 모두가 그 말에 동의를 했고 샘 가에 있는 돌 밑에 각자 자신들의 방울을 묻어두고 떠났다가 다시 이 지점에 돌아오게 되면 자신의 방울을 되찾아가기로 했습니다. 그것은 세 사람 중 제일 마지막으로 돌아오는 사람이 그것을 보면 다른 사람들은 이미 돌아와 있다는 것을 넌지시 알 수 있게 하기 위한 장치였던 것이었습니다.

"The first learnt how to go a six months' journey in an hour, the second how to make himself invisible, the third how to bring the dead to life again. All three arrived back simultaneously at the spring. He who could make himself invisible said the Padishah's daughter was very ill and would die in two hours; the other said he would prepare a medicine that would restore her to life again; the third volunteered to deliver the medicine. Quicker than lightning he was at the palace, in the chamber where the Princess lay dead. Hardly had the medicine touched her lips than she sat up as well as ever she had been. Meanwhile both the others came in and the Shah commanded all three to relate their experiences.
그렇게 해서 길을 떠난 왕자 중 첫 번째는 6개월이 걸리는 여행길을 한시간만에 주파하는 법을 배웠습니다. 그리고 왕자 중 두 번째는 자신의 몸이 보이지 않게 하는 법을 배웠고 왕자 중 세 번째 죽음으로부터 다시 생명을 되찾는 법을 배웠습니다. 그리고 거의 동시에 그 세 사람은 자신들이 헤어졌던 샘으로 되돌아왔습니다. 그런데 자신의 몸을 보이지 않게 할 수 있는 왕자가 말하기를 자신들이 청혼을 한 공주가 매우 아파서 두시간이 지나면 죽게되었노라고 말했습니다. 그러자 다른 왕자가 자신이 약을 만들어 먹이면 다시 그녀의 생명을 되살릴 수 있을 것이라고 했고 또 다른 왕자는 그 약을 자신이 전달하겠다고 말했습니다. 그렇게 하여 6개월 걸리는 거리를 한시간만에 내달리는 왕자가 약을 가지고 빛보다도 더 빠르게 왕궁에 도착해보니 공주는 이미 죽어서 침실에 누워있었습니다. 그것을 본 왕자가 황급히 약을 그녀의 입술에 대자 공주는 그동안 무슨 일이 있었느냐는 듯이 일어나 앉았습니다. 그럭저럭 하는 동안에 다른 왕자들도 모두 왕궁에 도착하자 왕은 세 명 모두에게 자신이 겪고 배운 일에 대해 이야기해보라고 말했습니다.

The nightingale paused for a few moments and then resumed: "Oh my Shahzada, which of the three Princes thinkest thou best deserved the maiden?" The Prince answered: "In my opinion, he who prepared the medicine." The nightingale contended for him who acquainted the others of the Princess's condition, and so they hotly disputed the matter.
여기서 나이팅게일 새는 잠시 이야기를 멈추었다가 다시 이야기를 이어갔습니다. "오 저의 왕자님, 이 세 명의 왕자 중 누가 그 공주와 결혼할 만한 자격을 갖추었다고 생각하시나요?" 그러자 왕자가 대답했습니다. "내 생각엔 공주를 살릴 약을 만든 왕자가 아닐까 해." 그러자 나이팅게일 새는 반론을 제기하며 다른 왕자들에게 공주가 죽게 되었다는 것을 알린 왕자가 마땅히 공주와 결혼할 자격이 있다고 주장했고, 그 일을 두고 나이팅게일 새와 왕자 사이에는 격한 논쟁이 벌어졌습니다.

The Silent Princess thought to herself: "They are quite forgetting him who could go a six months' journey in an hour." As the dispute continued she could endure it no longer, and, lifting her sevenfold veil, she cried: "You fools! I would give the maiden to him who brought the medicine. But for him she would have remained dead."
그 둘 사이에 벌어진 논쟁을 듣고있던 공주는 혼자 속으로 생각했습니다. "저들은 6개월 걸리는 거리를 한 시간만에 달려가 공주에게 약을 먹인 왕자는 아예 잊어버리고 있군." 그런데도 논쟁이 계속되자 마침내 공주는 더 이상 참지 못하고 일곱 겹의 베일을 들어올리며 이렇게 고함을 질렀습니다. "이 바보들아! 당연히 빠른 걸음으로 약을 가져다 준 왕자가 그 공주와 결혼해야지. 만일 그 왕자가 없었더라면 공주는 이미 죽어버렸을 것이고 셋 중 누가 그 공주와 결혼할 것인가 하는 이야기를 할 필요도 없을 테니까 말이야.."

The Padishah was immediately informed that his daughter had at length broken her silence. But the Princess protested that as she had been the victim of a ruse the youth should not be considered to have succeeded in his task until he had induced her to speak three times. Now said the Shah to the Prince: "If you can make her speak twice more she shall belong to you."
자신의 딸이 마침내 침묵을 깨트렸다는 이야기는 순식간에 왕의 귀에 들어갔습니다. 하지만 공주는 그동안 내내 계략의 희생물이 되어 살아왔기에 자신이 한번 말을 한 것으로는 왕자가 그의 임무를 완수한 것으로 볼 수 없다며 세 번 자신이 말을 하도록 만들지 못하면 자신과 결혼할 수 없다며 억지를 부렸습니다. 그러자 왕은 이제 말을 바꾸어 왕자에게 이렇게 말했습니다. "만일 자네가 두 번만 더 공주가 말하게 만들 수 있다면 자네와 공주를 결혼시켜 주겠네."

THE youth left the monarch's presence, went to his lodgings, and began to ponder the matter. While deep in thought, the nightingale said: "The Sultana is angry at having broken her silence, and has smashed the lamp stand, so tonight put me on the other stand by the wall."
왕궁을 나와 자신의 숙소로 돌아온 왕자는 깊은 생각에 잠겼습니다. 그렇게 생각에 잠겨있는데 나이팅게일 새가 말했습니다. "공주는 자신이 침묵을 깨트리고 말을 한 것에 대해 너무나 화가 나서 그 등잔대를 부숴 버렸답니다. 그러니 오늘밤은 벽 옆에 있는 다른 등잔대 위에 저를 놓아두세요."

Accordingly, when evening was come the Prince repaired with his nightingale to the serai. Entering the Princess's apartment, he put the bird-cage on the stand by the wall, and addressed the Sultana. As she disdained to answer, he turned to the stand and said: "The Princess refuses to speak; therefore I will converse with you. How are you?" "Quite well, thank you," came the answer at once. "I am glad the Sultana would not speak, otherwise you would not have spoken to me. As it is, I will tell you a story, if you will listen." "With great pleasure," returned the Prince. "Let me hear it."
이윽고 다시 저녁이 되자 기운을 회복한 왕자는 다시 나이팅게일 새를 데리고 왕궁으로 갔습니다. 그리고 공주의 방에 들어서자 가지고 온 새장을 벽 옆에 있는 등잔대 위에 올려놓았습니다. 그리고 공주를 인사를 했습니다. 하지만 그녀가 대꾸할 가치도 없다는 듯 대답이 없자, 왕자는 등잔대 쪽으로 돌아서서 이렇게 말했습니다. "공주님께서 말씀하시는 것을 거부하시니 어쩔 수없이 난 너랑 대화를 나누어야겠구나. 그래 잘 지내고 있니?" 그러자 그 즉시 이런 대답이 들려왔습니다. "네 덕분에 아주 잘 지내고 있어요. 고마워요." "공주님께서 말을 하지 않으시려고 하니 전 기뻐요. 그렇지 않았다면 왕자님께서 제게 말을 걸어오지 않았을 테니까요. 왕자님께서 원하신다면 제가 어제처럼 이야기를 하나 해드릴께요." 그 말에 왕자가 대답했습니다. "네 이야기를 듣는 것은 정말 즐거우니 이야기를 해보렴."

So the nightingale commenced: "In a certain town there once lived a woman with whom three men were in love--Baldji-Oglu the Honey-maker's Son, Jagdji-Oglu the Tallow-maker's Son, and Tiredji-Oglu the Tanner's Son. Each used to visit the woman in such wise that neither knew of the others' visits. While brushing her hair one day, the woman discovered a grey strand, and said to herself, 'Alas! I am growing old. The time will soon come when my friends will become tired of me. I must make up my mind to get married.'
그러자 나이팅게일 새가 이야기를 시작했습니다. "옛날에 어떤 마을에 한 여자가 살고있었는데, 양봉업자의 아들인 '발드지 오글루'란 이름의 청년, 우지(牛脂)업자의 아들인 '자그쥐 오글루'란 이름의 청년 그리고 가죽을 다듬는 업자의 아들인 '티레쥐 오글루', 이 세 명의 남자가 모두 그녀를 사랑했답니다. 그런데 이 남자들은 영리하게도 각자 다른 사람의 눈에 띄지 않도록 해가며 번갈아 가며 여자를 방문하는 것이었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 거울 앞에서 빗으로 머리를 빗다가 흰머리가 생긴 것을 본 여자는 혼자서 이렇게 생각했답니다. "이런, 내가 벌써 이렇게 늙다니. 그렇다면 애인들도 곧 나에 대해 싫증을 내기 시작할텐데, 나도 계속 이렇게 지낼 것이 아니라 마음을 단단히 먹고 셋 중 한 사람을 선택해서 결혼을 해야지."

Next day she invited the three lovers to visit her, at different hours. The first arrival was Jagdji, who found the woman in tears. Asking the cause of her grief, she was answered: 'My father is dead, and I have buried him in the garden; but his spirit appears to torment me. If you love me wrap yourself in the winding-sheet and go and lie for three hours in the grave; then my father's spirit will haunt me no more.' Saying this, the woman led him to the open grave which she had made, and as Jagdji would have drowned himself for her sake he cheerfully donned the winding-sheet and lay down in it.
그래서 여자는 세 명의 애인에게 각각 다른 시간에 자신의 집을 방문해 줄 것을 청했습니다. 처음 온 사람은 우지(牛脂)업자의 아들인 '자그쥐' 였는데 그는 들어서다가 여자가 눈물을 흘리고 있는 것을 보고, 왜 슬픔에 잠겨있는지 그 이유를 물었습니다. 그러자 여자는 이렇게 대답했습니다. "제가 돌아가신 아버지를 정원에 묻었는데, 아버지의 혼령이 나타나서 절 괴롭힌답니다. 그러니 만일 당신이 절 진정으로 사랑하신다면 당신 몸을 수의(壽衣)에 감싸고서 3시간 동안만 무덤 속에 들어가 누워있어 주세요. 그러면 아마 아버지의 혼령이 더 이상 제 앞에 출몰하지 못할 것 같으니까요." 이렇게 말한 여자는 우지(牛脂)업자의 아들인 '자그쥐'를 자신이 미리 만들어 둔 열려있는 무덤으로 데려갔습니다. 그러자 '자그쥐'는 여자의 애절한 부탁을 뿌리칠 수 없어 기꺼이 수의(壽衣)를 입고서 그 무덤 속에 들어가 누웠습니다.

"In the meantime came Baldji, who inquired of the woman why she wept. She repeated the story of her father's death and burial, and giving him a large stone, told him to go to the grave, and when the ghost appeared, to hit him with it.
그리고 얼마 후에 양봉업자의 아들인 '발드지'가 오더니 그녀에게 왜 울고있는지 그 이유를 물었습니다. 여자는 조금 전처럼 그녀의 아버지가 죽어서 묻은 것과 혼령이 나타나 자신을 괴롭힌다는 똑같은 이야기를 하고는, 커다란 돌을 쥐어주면서 그것을 가지고 무덤에 가서 있다가 혼령이 나타나면 그 돌로 혼령을 때려달라고 부탁했습니다.

No sooner had Baldji taken his leave and gone to the grave than Tiredji came in. He also sympathized with the woman and inquired what was the trouble. 'How can I help but weep,' said the woman, 'when my father is dead and buried in the garden. One of his enemies is a sorcerer; he is now lying in wait to carry off the body; as you may see he has already opened the grave with that intention. If you can bring me the corpse out of the grave all will be well; if not, I am lost.'
'발드지'가 여자의 부탁을 받고 무덤으로 떠난 지 얼마 지나지 않아 이번에는 가죽을 다듬는 업자의 아들인 '티레쥐'가 왔습니다. 그 역시 집으로 들어서다가 여자가 울고있는 것을 보고는 그녀를 달래려고 여자에게 무슨 걱정이 있느냐고 물었습니다. 그러자 여자가 대답했습니다. "저에게는 우는 것 외에 무슨 다른 방법이 없어요. 제 아버지께서 돌아가셔서 아버지를 정원에 묻었는데 아버지의 원수 중 한 명인 마술사가 지금 아버지의 시신(屍身)을 가져가려고 하고 있답니다. 그러니 당신께서 그 마술사가 아버지의 시신을 가져가려고 무덤을 열어둔 것이 보이면 무덤 밖으로 나와있는 아버지의 시신을 제게 가져다 주세요. 그러면 모든 일이 아주 잘 해결될 거예요. 그렇지 않으면 전 아버지의 시신을 잃고 말 것이랍니다.

The words were scarcely uttered before Tiredji had gone to the grave to take up Jagdji and bring him into her presence. But Baldji, thinking there were two ghosts instead of one, endeavoured to hit both with the stone. Meanwhile, Jagdji, believing the ghost had struck him, sprang out of the grave and dropped the winding-sheet. Then the three men recognised each other and explanations were demanded.
겨우 전해들은 이 이야기의 결론은 이렇답니다. 먼저 '티레쥐'가 무덤으로 가서 무덤 속에 누워있던 시신인 '자그쥐'를 그녀가 있는 곳으로 들어다 주려고 하자, 한 마리가 아닌 두 마리의 유령이 나타났다고 생각하여 당황한 '발드지'는 두 마리의 유령 모두를 돌로 내려치느라 애를 썼고, 한편 유령이 돌로 자신을 내려친다고 믿은 '자그쥐'는 무덤 속에서 뛰쳐나와, 수의(壽衣)를 벗어 던지고 도망을 갔다는 것입니다. 그런 다음 세 남자는 서로 상대방이 누구인지를 알아채고는 줄줄이 변명을 늘어놓았답니다."

"Now, my Prince," said the nightingale, "which of the three most deserved the woman? I think Tiredji." But the Prince was for Baldji, who had put himself to so much trouble; and so they commenced to argue as before, taking care to avoid mentioning Jagdji. The Princess, who had been listening attentively to the narrative, was disappointed that the deserts of Jagdji were not taken into consideration, and she delivered her opinion with some warmth.
"자, 그렇다면 존경하는 왕자님, 전 시신을 그녀에게 들어다 주려고 한 '티레쥐'라고 생각하는데, 세 사람 중 누가 가장 여자에게 헌신적인 사람일까요?" 하고 나이팅게일 새가 말했습니다. 하지만 왕자는 유령 둘을 상대하느라 가장 애를 썼던 '발드쥐'가 가장 여자에게 헌신적이었던 사람이라고 말했습니다. 이렇게 하여 앞서와 마찬가지로 나이팅게일 새와 왕자 사이에 논쟁이 벌어졌습니다. 그러면서도 무덤 속에 꼼짝 않고 누워있던 '자그쥐'에 대해서는 단 한마디의 언급도 하지 않았습니다. 그러자 둘 사이에 오고가는 이야기를 유심히 듣고 있던 공주는 둘 모두 가장 애를 쓴 '자그쥐'에 대해서는 전혀 배려가 없는 것에 실망해서 마침내 격앙하여 자신의 의견을 내뱉고야 말았습니다.

The news that the Silent Princess had again spoken was carried to the Padishah in his palace. Yet once more must she be compelled to speak. As the youth was sitting in his room the nightingale informed him that the Princess was so furious for having been tricked into speaking again that she had broken the wall-stand to pieces. Next evening, therefore, he must put the bird-cage behind the door.
단 한번도 입을 열지 않았던 공주가 다시 말을 했다는 소식이 왕궁에 있던 왕에게 전해졌습니다. 왕자는 아직도 한번 더 그녀가 입을 열도록 유도해야 하는 일이 남아 있기에 자신의 방에 앉아 생각에 잠겨있었습니다. 그러자 나이팅게일 새는 왕자에게 공주가 또다시 왕자의 꾀에 넘어가 말을 하고 만 것에 대해 너무나 화가 나서 왕자와 대화를 나누었다고 생각한 그 등잔대를 산산조각 내버렸다는 소식을 전해주었습니다. 그래서 그 다음날 저녁 왕자는 나이팅게일 새가 들어있는 새장을 문 뒤에 숨겨두어야 했습니다.

The third and final interview found the Princess no more amiable than usual; and as she refused to open her mouth the Prince tried his conversational powers on the door.
The door (or rather the bird behind it) related the following story:
세 번째이자 마지막 날인 공주와의 접견은 예전보다 더욱 더 말을 붙이기 어려웠습니다. 그것은 공주가 아예 입을 열지 않기로 단단히 마음을 먹고 있었기 때문인데 그러자 할 수없이 왕자는 자신의 대화상대로 문을 선택했습니다. 다음 이야기는 그 문(사실은 문 뒤에 숨어있던 새가)이 한 이야기랍니다.
THERE once were a carpenter, a tailor, and a softa travelling together. Coming to a certain town, they hired a common dwelling and opened business. One night when the others were asleep the carpenter got up, drank coffee, lit his chibouque, and formed an image of a charming maiden out of the small pieces of wood lying about the room. Having finished, he lay down again and fell asleep. Shortly afterwards the tailor woke up, and, seeing the image, made suitable clothing for it, put it on, and went to sleep again.
"옛날에 목수와 재단사 그리고 신학도가 함께 여행하다가, 어떤 도시에 가서 평범한 집 한 채를 함께 세내어 사업을 펼쳤습니다. 그러던 어느 날 밤 다른 두 사람이 자고있을 때 목수가 일어나 커피를 마시고 자신의 긴 담뱃대에 불을 붙이고서, 자신들이 누워있는 방 주위에 놓여있던 작은 나무 조각들을 모아 아주 어여쁘게 생긴 처녀의 형상을 만들어놓았습니다. 그렇게 한 다음 그는 다시 누워 잠이 들었습니다. 잠시 후에는 잠을 깬 재단사가 그 그림을 보고서 그 그림 속의 처녀에게 꼭 어울리는 옷을 만들어 입히고는 다시 잠이 들었습니다.

About dawn the softa awoke, and, seeing the image of the lovely girl, prayed to Allah to grant it life. The softa's prayer was heard, and the image was transformed into an incomparably beautiful living maiden, who opened her eyes as one waking from a dream. When the others rose all three men set to disputing as to the possession of the lovely creature. Now to which, in justice, should she belong? In my opinion, to the carpenter." Thus the nightingale broke off.
그리고 거의 새벽 무렵에 문득 잠에서 깬 신학도는 너무나 사랑스러운 소녀의 형상을 보자 신에게 그녀에게 생명을 부여해 달라고 기도를 올렸습니다. 그런데 그 신학도의 기도가 통하여, 꿈에서 깨어보니 누군가 그녀의 눈을 뜨게 한 것처럼, 그렇게 만든 형상이 그 누구와도 비할 수 없는 살아있는 아름다운 진짜 처녀로 변해버린 것입니다. 그리하여 두 사람이 마저 일어났을 때 세 사람 사이에서는 아주 사랑스런 자신들의 피조물인 그 처녀의 소유권을 두고 논쟁이 벌어졌답니다. 제 생각으로는 그녀를 처음 만든 목수의 소유가 되어야 한다고 생각하는데, 이치대로 한다면, 그녀는 누구에게 속해야 할까요?" 이렇게 말한 다음 나이팅게일 새는 말을 중단해 버렸습니다.

The Prince thought the maiden should belong to the tailor, and as on the previous occasions a lively debate ensued. The Princess's ire was aroused at the softa's claim being neglected, and she exclaimed: "you fools! the softa should have her. She owed her life to him; she therefore belonged to him and to no one else."
왕자는 당연히 그 처녀가 어울리는 옷을 만들어 입힌 재단사의 소유가 되어야만 한다고 생각했고, 앞서의 경우와 마찬가지로 격렬한 토론이 끝없이 이어졌습니다. 공주의 분노가 끓어오른 것은 신학도의 권리는 계속 무시되고 있다는 점이었습니다. 그래서 도저히 참지 못하고 이렇게 고함을 질렀습니다. "이 바보들아, 당연히 그 처녀는 신학도의 소유가 되어야만 한단 말이야. 그 사람 덕택에 그녀는 생명을 얻게 되었으니 그녀는 그에게 생명을 빚지고 있어. 그러니까 당연히 그녀는 다른 사람 그 어느 누구도 아닌 신학도의 소유란 말이다."

Hardly had she finished speaking than the news was carried to the Padishah. The Prince had now rightfully won the Princess - silent no longer. The whole town put on a festive appearance and began preparations for the wedding. The Prince, however, wished his marriage to take place in his father's palace; and great was the rejoicing when he arrived home with his bride. Forty days and forty nights were the festivities kept up;
and the old woman whose jugs had been broken
