12. THE WAY

Life is not so complex if we do not so persistently make it so. We accept the results or the effects; but we concern ourselves all too little with the realm of cause. The springs of life are all from within. Invariably it is true -as is the inner so always and inevitably will be the outer.

삶이란 우리가 끊임없이 그렇게 만들어 나가지 않는 한 복잡한 게 아니다. 우리는 겉으로 나타난 결과의 세계만을 인정할 뿐, 내부의 원인 세계에 대해서는 깊이 생각하지 않는다.삶의 흐름은 전부 내부에 그 원인이 있다. 이 하나만큼은 변함이 없다. 즉, 안이 그럴 때 바깥도 그렇다. 내부가 원일 때 외부도 원이며, 내부가 네모꼴일 때 외부도 네모꼴이다.

There is a Divine current that will bear us with peace and safety on its bosom if we are sufficiently alert and determined to find it -- and go with it. The natural, normal life is by a law divine under the guidance of the Spirit.

"우주의 큰 생명력"의 물결은 우리가 늘 깨어서 그것을 찾아나갈 때 우리에게 평화를 주고 가슴으로 우리를 지켜준다. 낱낱의 영들 뒤에 숨은 "큰 영"의 안내를 받으면서 신성의 법칙에 따라 살아갈 때 그 삶이 바로 자연적이고 정상적인 삶이다.

There is a mystic force that transcends the powers of the intellect and likewise of the body. There are certain faculties that we have that are not a part of the active, thinking mind; they transcend any possible activities of the active, thinking mind. Through them we have intuitions, impulses, leadings, that instead of being merely the occasional, should be the normal and habitual.

육체의 감각이나 머리의 힘으로는 도저히 파악할수 없는, 그것을 한 단계 초월해 있는 어떤 신비한 힘이 있다. 생각으로는 이해할 수 없는 어떤 힘을 느끼는 능력이 우리에게 있다. 그 능력을 통해 우리는 직관이라는 것을 갖게 되고, 내부의 목소리에 귀 기울이게 되며, 길을 안내받게 된다. 우리는 지금 가끔씩 이런 경험을 하고 있지만 내부의 알맹이가 온전히 꽃피는 이런 삶이 밥먹고 잠자는 것처럼 아주 당연하고 자연스럽게 지속되어야 한다.

They would be if we understood better the laws that pertain to them and observed them; for here, as in connection with everything in the universe and everything in human life, all is governed by law -the Elemental law of cause and effect. Supreme Intelligence, Creative Power, works only through law. There is an inner spirit or guide that rules and regulates the life when the life is brought into that state or condition whereby it can make itself known, and in turn dominate the life.

그 속안에 숨은 법칙을 보다 깊이 이해하고 들여다본다면 그러한 삶은 쉽게 우리의 것이 될 수 있다. 왜냐하면 이 우주 속에서 펼쳐지는 만 가지 일이나 사람이 살아가는 가운데 일어나는 모든 일들이 한결같은 법칙에 의해 움직이고 있기 때문이다. 어떤 법칙이냐 하면 원인과 결과라는 가장 기본이 되는 법칙이다. 이 우주를 운행하는 "최고 지성", "창조 에너지"는 오로지 법칙에 따라서만 일한다. 우리 내부에는 삶을 인도하는 내부의 영혼이라 할까 안내자가 있어서 우리가 그를 알아보고 따르기만 하면 삶은 저절로 길을 알아 흘러간다.

Jesus, Master of the laws of life, and supreme revealer of them to men, had a full and practical knowledge of it. He not only abundantly demonstrated it in His own life; but He made clear the way whereby it may become the common possession of other lives. 'Do not worry about your life,' was the Master's clear-cut and repeated command. He not only gave the injunction or command, but He demonstrated the method whereby the fears and forebodings and uncertainties of life can be displaced by a force or a power that will bring them to an end.

삶의 이치를 깨닫고 그것을 많은 사람에게 널리 펴다 간 예수는 그 자신부터가 그런 삶을 살았을 뿐만 아니라 모두의 삶 속에 그 힘이 있음을 확실히 보여주었다. "너의 사는 일에 대하여 걱정하지 말라"는 말이 예수의 가르침의 핵심이었으며, 예수가 늘 되풀이했던 말이었다. 예수는 그런 가르침을 폈을 뿐 아니라 두려움이나 삶의 근심 걱정들이 내부의 힘에 의해 구름 걷히듯 사라질 수 있음을 실제로 보여주었다.

It was embodied in His other injunction or command that He gave utterance to so repeatedly: 'Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.' And by all these things, He meant, all of the common needs and necessities of the daily life.

그것은 예수의 또 다른 가르침 속에도 잘 나타나 있다. "너희는 먼저 하느님의 나라와 그 분의 의로움을 구하라. 그리하면 모든 일이 저절로 이루어지리라." 여기서 다른 모든 일이라 함은 매일의 삶 속에서 필요한 모든 것을 말한다.

The finding of the Kingdom of God is the recognition of the indwelling Divine Life as the source, and therefore as the Essence, of our own lives. It is the bringing of men's minds and therefore acts into harmony with the Divine will and purpose. It is the saving of men from their lower conceptions and selves, and a lifting them up to a realization of their higher selves, which, as He taught, is eternally one with God, the Father; and which, when realized, lifts a man's thoughts, acts, purposes, and conduct -his entire life -up to that pattern or standard.

하느님의 나라를 찾으라는 말은, 모든 것의 원천이며 우리 삶의 본질인 내부의 "우주의 큰 생명력"을 똑바로 알리는 뜻이다. 마음과 행동을 "우주의 큰 생명력"의 뜻에 조화를 이루라는 말이다.

It was not merely a poetic fancy, but the recognition of a fundamental law, as well-known laws of modern psychology, mental and spiritual science, are now clearly demonstrating, that induced the Master to say: 'And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right-hand and when ye turn to the left.' And again: 'The Lord in the midst of thee is mighty.' And still again: 'He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.'

이것은 시적인 공상이 아니라 현대심리학이나 정신과학에서도 널리 알려진 가장 기본되는 법칙이다. 예수는 그것을 이렇게 말한다. "네 귀가 네 뒤에서 이렇게 말하는 소리를 들으리라. '여기가 길이니 이쪽으로 가라. 가다가 오른쪽으로 돌아서 왼쪽으로 가라.' "

How often do the meager accounts of the Master's life tell us of His going up to the mountain to pray for communion with the Father. And then we find Him invariably down among men, always where the need for help and for human service was the greatest.

얼마 안되는 생애동안 예수는 얼마나 자주 산 속으로 들어가 기도를 했던가! 그것은 바로 "우주의 큰 생명력"과 대화를 하기 위해서였다. 그리고 다시 군중들 속으로 내려왔을 때 그는 더 많은 도움을 주고, 더 깊은 가르침을 펼 수 있었다.

This habit of taking a little time daily alone, in the quiet, in communion with one's Source that the illumination and guidance of the Holy Spirit may become alive and active in the life, and going then about one's daily work ever open to and conscious of this Divine guidance, trusting and resting in it, strengthened and sustained always by this Divine power, will bring definiteness and direction, will bring hope and courage, will bring peace and power to everyone who will heed the Master's injunction and will follow His example. These it has brought to great numbers to whom before, life was an enigma, and this because the life had been lived entirely from the outside.

이렇게 매일 십분 씩이라도 조용한 가운데 홀로 앉아 자신의 원천과 영적인 대화를 나누면서 "우주의 큰 생명력"의 안내에 귀를 기울이는 습관이 될 때 그 보살핌을 받아서 훨씬 강하고 흔들리지 않는 삶, 강한 신뢰 속에서 하나의 놀이처럼 사는 삶, 희망과 용기, 평화와 힘으로 넘치는 삶이 찾아온다. 전에는 삶이라는 게 도무지 모를 수수께끼였던 사람이라도 해답을 얻을 수 있다. 그리고 삶이 수수께끼였던 것은 그들이 늘 표면에서만 맴돌며 내부로 들어가지 못했기 때문이다.

The higher forces and powers of the inner life, those of the mind and spirit, always potential within, become of actual value only as they are recognized, realized, and used. The Master's Way of the Spirit, the finding of the Kingdom within, leads in to no blind alley. It leads out and triumphantly out on to the great plain of clear vision, of un-self-centered activity, of heroic endeavor and accomplishment.

"우주의 큰 생명력"은 절대로 막다른 골목으로 인도하는 법이 없다. 비로소 눈이 크게 뜨진 삶, 나 중심적이지 않은 삶, 엄청나고 위대한 일을 하면서도 그 일에 매이지 않는 소박하고 자유로운 삶이 시작된다.

If we would spend a fraction of the time that we spend in needless anxiety in definite constructive thought, in 'silent demand', visualizing the conditions that we would have, with faith in their fulfillment, we would soon know that the Master's illustration of the care-free bird is fact and not fancy. It is, He said, what life should be.

쓸데없는 근심 걱정으로 다 허비하던 시간을 조용하고 맑은 가운데 내부의 침묵의 소리를 듣는 시간으로 사용하라. 그때 우리는 근심 걱정 없는 새나 들에 핀 백합에 대한 예수의 가르침이 단순한 시적 공상이 아니라 사실 자체였음을 알게 된다.

The little time spent in the quiet each day, alone with one's God, that we may make and keep our connection with the Infinite Source -- our source and our life -- will be a boon to any life. It will prove, if we are faithful, to be the most priceless possession that we have.

날마다 마음을 비우고 자신의 신과 함께 있는 시간을 가짐으로써 "우주의 큰 생명력"과 하나가 될 때 누구나 큰 은혜를 받는다. 깊이 신뢰하기만 하면 그것은 값으로 따질 수 없는 큰 재산이 될 것이다.

While it is impossible for one to make a formula which another should follow, the following may perchance contain some little suggestions - each must follow his or her own leading and, therefore, method.

누구라도 다른 사람을 위해 인생의 공식을 만들어 줄 수는 없는 노릇이긴 하지만, 다음의 "명상의 글"은 그대에게 도움이 될 것이다. 하지만 누구나 자기 스스로 발견한 길을 걸어가야 하며 자신의 방식대로 꽃피어야 한다는 사실을 잊지는 말아야 한다.

My Father in Heaven, Infinite Spirit of life and love and wisdom and power, in whom I live and move and have my being, whence cometh my help, manifest Thyself in me.

제가 그 속에서 살아가고 있고 움직이고 있으며 삶을 이어가고 있는 무한한 생명의 성령이시여, 저의 도움이 드러나는 곳이면 어디에서나 저를 통해 당신 자신을 밝게 드러내시는 사랑과 지혜와 힘의 성령이시며 무한한 생명의 성령이신 하늘에 계신 저의 아버지 하느님,

Help me to open myself to the highest wisdom and insight and love and power, that I may serve Thee and my fellow-man, and all my fellow-creatures faithfully, and that I may have the Divine guidance and care, and that all my needs be supplied.

제가 거룩하신 당신과 저의 형제인 인류와 저의 동료인 모든 생명 있는 것들을 충실하게 섬길 수 있도록, 그리고 제가 신성의 안내와 배려를 받을 수 있도록, 더하여 저의 모든 바램이 충족될 수 있도록, 가장 높은 지혜와 통찰력에 가장 높은 사랑과 힘에 제가 제 자신을 열 수 있도록 도와주소서.

Oh Christ within, enfold and lead me and reign supreme, that the One Life that is my life I may realize and manifest ever more fully. I am strong in the Infinite Spirit of life and love and wisdom and power. I have and shall have the Divine guidance and care; for it is the Father that worketh in me - My Father works and I work.

오 내면의 그리스도시여, 제가 거룩한 한 생명이 저의 생명임을 깨달을 수 있도록,그리고 항상 더 온전히 증명할 수 있도록, 저를 껴안아 주시고 이끌어 주시고 온전히 다스려 주시옵소서. 저는 무한한 생명과 사랑과 지혜와 힘인 거룩한 성령 속에서는 강합니다. 그러하기에 저는 신성한 안내와 배려를 지니고, 지녀 나갈 것입니다.그것은 제 속에서 일하시는 분이 바로 아버지 당신이시기 때문입니다. 아버지 하느님 당신께서 일하시기에 저도 일합니다.

13. A RESOLVE FOR TODAY

THE following little motto -- a resolve for today -- may contain a little aid for the following of the Way.

다음에 나오는 "오늘의 결심"이라는 내용의 글은 삶의 길을 가는데에 도움이 될 것이다.

I AM RESOLVED

저는 이렇게 살고자 합니다.

I believe that my Master intended that I take His teachings in the simple, frank, and open manner in which He gave them, out on the hill-side, by the calm blue waters of the Galilean sea, and out under the stars of heaven.

저는 믿고 있습니다. 제 주님께서는 천상의 별들이 하늘을 수놓은 밤, 푸른 물이 보이는 고요한 갈릴리 호숫가 언덕 위에서 저희에게 주신 당신의 가르침을 저희가 단순하고 솔직하게 그리고 당신께서 주신 그대로 열린 태도로 받아들이기를 바라신다는 것을.

I believe that He knew what He meant, and that He meant what He said, when He gave the substance of all religion and the duty of man as love to God, and love and service for His fellow-man.

저는 믿고 있습니다. 주님께서는 당신 자신이 하시고자 하시는 말씀이 무엇을 의미하는지 이미 알고 계셨으며, 당신께서 모든 종교의 대의를 밝혀 주셨을 때, 당신께서 말씀하신 바는, 하느님에 대한 사랑으로서 우리 인간의 의무는 우리의 형제인 인류에 대한 사랑과 봉사가 그 의미라는 것을.

I am therefore resolved at this, the beginning of another day, this fresh beginning of life, to go forth eager and happy and unafraid, in that I can come into the same filial relations of love and guidance and care with my Father in Heaven that my Master realized and lived, and going before revealed to me. 그래서 저는 하루가 시작되는 이 시간, 새로운 삶의 시작인 이 시간, 저에게 당신을 드러내시기 전에 저의 주님께서 깨달으셨고 그 분의 뜻에 따라 살아가셨던 하느님, 부모와 자식간의 관계와 똑같은사랑과 안내와 배려의 관계로서 존재하시기에, 제가 나아갈 수 있는 하늘에 계신 저의 아버지 하느님과 더불어, 열정과 행복으로 오늘 하루를 두려움 없이 나아가고자 합니다.

I shall listen intently to know, and shall run with eager feet to do my Father's will, calm and quiet within, knowing that I shall have the Divine guidance and care, and that no harm therefore shall befall me; for I am now living in God's life and there I shall live forever. 저의 아버지 하느님, 저는 당신께서 하시고자 하는 바를 알고자 그리고 당신께서 하시고자 하는 바 그대로 발로 열심히 뛰기 위해서 차분하고 조용하게 내면에 귀를 기울여 주의 깊게 들을 것입니다. 저는 압니다. 제가 거룩한 신성(神性)의 인도와 보살핌을 받게 될 것임을, 그러므로 그 어떤 해로움도 제게는 내리지 않을 것임을. 왜냐하면 지금의 저는 거룩한 하느님의 생명 속에서 살아가고 있고 그곳에서 영원히 살아 갈 것이기 때문입니다.

I am resolved in all human contact to meet petulance with patience, questionings with kindness, hatred with love, eager always to do the kindly deed that brings the joy of service -- and that alone makes human life truly human. I shall seek no advantage for myself to the detriment or the harm of my neighbor, knowing that it is only through the law of mutuality that I can fully enjoy what I gain -- or can even be a man. 저는 제가 만나는 모든 사람들을 이렇게 대하고자 합니다. 그들이 무례하게 행동하면 저는 그들을 인내로 대하고 그들이 의아해하면 친절하게 설명하며 그들의 미움에는 사랑으로 늘 정성을 다해 섬김의 기쁨을 가져오는 인정 많고 마음씨 고운 행동으로 그들을 대하고자 합니다. 그리고 홀로 있음은 인간의 삶을 진정 인간답게 만든다고 믿습니다. 저는 제가 얻고자 하는 것이면 그 무엇이든 얻어 충분히 즐길 수 있기에, 그리고 제가 되고자하는 그 어떤 사람이라도 될 수 있기에, 제 이웃에게 손해를 입히거나 또는 이웃을 해롭게 하는 그런 짓은 오직 상호의존의 법칙 내에서만 존재하는 것임을 알기에, 제 자신에 대한 그 어떤 유익도 구하지 않으려 합니다.

I am resolved therefore so to live this day that, when the twilight comes and the night falls, I shall be not only another day's journey nearer home; but I shall have lived a man's part and done a man's work in the world and shall indeed deserve my Father's love and care. 그러므로 저는 오늘부터 동이 트는 아침에도 어둠이 내리는 밤에도 이런 결심으로 살아가고자 합니다. <나는 집에 더욱 가까워지기 위한 나만의 또 다른 날들의 여행을 하게 되리라. 하지만 내가 인류의 일원이라는 것 역시 잊지 않고서 살아가리라. 나는 이 세상에서 인간으로서의 의무를 다하리라. 그리하여 나는 진정으로 나의 아버지 하느님의 사랑과 보살핌에 보답하리라.>
