Avoid disputes. Truth is an axiom; it needs no proof. Whatever must be propped with argument and proof is soon or late knocked down with proof and argument. To prove a thing is to disprove its opposite. To prove its opposite is to disprove it. God has no opposites. How shall you prove or disprove Him?
논쟁을 피하라. '진실'은 공리(公理)이다. '진실'은 증명을 필요로 하지 않는다. 논쟁과 증명에 의지해야 하는 것은 어떤 것이든 조만간 증명과 논쟁에 의해 타파되기 마련이다. 보통 어떤 것을 증명하는 일은 그 대립물을 논박하는 것이다. 그 대립물을 증명하는 일은 그 자체를 논박하는 것이다. 그러나 신에게는 어떠한 대립물도 없다. 그러니 어떻게 신을 증명한다거나 논할 수 있겠는가?

To be a conduit for Truth the tongue must never be a flail, a fang, a weather-vane , an acrobat, or a scavenger.
'진실'의 샘이 되기 위해서 혀는 결코 도리깨나 독이빨, 풍향계나 곡예사, 혹은 썩은 음식이나 먹는 동물 같은 것이어서는 안 된다.

Speak to relieve the speechless. Be speechless to relieve yourselves.

말할 수 없는 자들을 해방시키기 위해 말하라. 스스로를 해방시키기 위해 입을 다물고 있으라.

Words are vessels that ply the seas of Space and touch at many ports. Take care as to what you load them with; for having run their course, they shall ultimately discharge their cargo at your gate.

언어는 공간의 바다를 항해하면서 수많은 항구에 정박하는 교통수단이다. 언어와 함께 무엇을 실을지 주의를 기울이라. 언어는 자기 길을 가다가 마지막에는 그대의 문 앞에 짐을 내려 놓을테니.

What the broom is to the house, self-searching is to the heart. Sweep well your hearts.

A well-swept heart is a fortress unassailable.

집에서 쓰는 빗자루와 같은 것이 마음에서 자기를 탐구하는 일이다. 그대의 마음을 잘 청소하라. 말끔히 청소된 마음은 난공불락의 요새이다.

As you feed on men and things so they feed on you. Be wholesome food to others if you would not be poisoned.

그대가 다른 사람들과 사물에 의해 살아가듯이, 다른 사람들이나 사물도 그대에 의해 살아간다. 그대가 독을 마시고 싶지 않거든, 남들에게 좋은 음식이 되라.

When in doubt about the next step, stand still.

다음에 디딜 발걸음이 불안할 때는 가만히 그대로 서 있으라.

What you dislike dislikes you; like it and lit it be, thus removing an obstacle from your path.

당신이 싫어하는 것은 그것 역시 당신을 싫어한다. 그것을 좋아하고 그대로 내버려 두라. 그렇게 할 때 그대의 길을 방해하는 장애물이 제거된다.

The most unendurable nuisance is to consider anything a nuisance. Take your choice: either to won all things, or nothing at all. No middle course is possible.

가장 견디기 힘들게 성가신 일은 사물을 성가신 대상으로 보는 것이다. 어느 쪽을 선택할지 결정하라. 모든 것을 갖든지, 아니면 아무 것도 갖지 않든지, 중간의 선택은 있을 수 없다.

Every stumbling block is a warning. Read the warning well, and the stumbling block shall become a beacon.

걸림돌은 어떤 것이라도 그대에게 다가오는 경고이다. 그 경고를 잘 해독하라. 그러면 그 걸림돌은 지표가 될 것이다.

The straight is the brother of the crooked. The one is a short cut; and the other, a roundabout way. Have patience with the crooked.

직선은 곡선의 형제이다. 한쪽은 가까운 길이고, 또 한쪽은 돌아가는 길이다.

Patience is health when leaning upon Faith. When unaccompanied by Faith it is paralysis.

곡선에 대해 강한 인내심을 가져라. 인내는 '신념'에 의지할 때는 건강하다. '신념'을 동반하지 않을 때는 마비(痲痺)이다. 

To be, to feel, to think, to imagine, to know - behold the order of the main stages in the circuit of human life.

존재하고, 느끼고, 생각하고, 상상하고, 하는 것 - 인간의 생을 순회하는 주요 단계가 이렇게 질서 잡혀 있음을 보라.

Beware of giving and receiving praise, even when most sincere and deserved. As to flattery, be deaf and dumb to its insidious vows.

칭찬을 주는 것과 받는 일에 주의하라. 설령 그 칭찬이 더없이 진실하고 가치있는 것이라 하더라도. 아첨하는 자의 숨겨진 의도에 대해서는 입도 귀도 닫아 버려라.

You borrow everything you give so long as you are conscious of giving. In truth, you can give naught, which is yours. You only give to men what you keep in trust for men. That which is yours - and yours alone - you cannot give away even if you desired.

준다는 것을 의식하는 한, 그대는 주는 것 모두를 빌리고 있는 셈이다. 실제 자기 것을 준다는 것은 불가능하다. 남에게 준 것은 실제로는 그 사람한테서 맡아 보관하고 있던 것이다. 그대들의 것 그리고 그대들만의 것은 누가 바란다 해도 양도할 수 없는 것이다.

Keep equipoise, and you shall be the standard and the scales for men to measure and to weigh themselves.

균형을 유지하라. 그리하면 그대들은 스스로를 측정하는 척도가 되고, 스스로를 측량하는 저울이 되리라.

There is nor poverty nor riches. There is a knack of using things.
빈곤함도 부유함도 없다. 있다면 오로지 사물을 쓰는 법만이 있다.

The really poor is he who misuses what he has. The really rich is he who well uses what he has.

참으로 가난한 자는 자기가 가진 것을 잘못 쓰는 자이다. 참으로 풍요로운 자는 자기가 가진 것을 잘 사용하는 자이다.

Even a mouldy crust of bread may be riches beyond computing. Even a cellar stocked with gold may be poverty beyond relief.

곰팡내 나는 빵껍질조차 헤아릴 수 없는 재산일 수 있다. 황금이 쌓인 창고라도 구제할 수 없는 빈곤일 수 있다.

Where many roads converge do not hesitate as to which one to follow. To a God seeking heart all roads lead to God.

수많은 갈림길에서 어느 길로 갈 것인지 망설일 필요가 없다. 신을 찾는 마음에게는 모든 길이 신과 통해 있다.

Approach in reverence all forms of Life. In the least significant is hid the key to the most significant.

온갖 형상을 취하는 '위대한 생명'에게 외경(畏敬)의 마음으로 다가가라.전혀 중요하지 않은 것 속에 가장 중요한 것으로 가는 열쇠가 숨겨져 있다.

All works of Life are significant - yea marvelous, surpassing and inimitable, Life busies not itself with useless trifles. To issue from the workshops of Nature a thing must be worthy of Nature's loving care and most painstaking art. Should it not be worthy of your respect, at least If gnats and ants be worthy of respect, how much more so your fellow-men?

'위대한 생명'의 모든 작품에는 의미가 있다. 실로 경이롭고 탁월하며 모방할 수 없는 의미가 있다. '위대한 생명'은 쓸모없는 사소한 일로 바쁘게 움직이지 않는다. 사물은 '위대한 자연'의 작업장에서 생긴 것이므로, '위대한 자연'의 마음이 담긴 배려와 최고의 정성이 담긴 예술임에 틀림없다. 그렇다면 사물은 적어도 그대들이 경의를 표할 만한 것이 아니던가? 만약 파리나 개미가 존경할 만한 것이라면, 그대들의 형제는 마땅히 그 이상의 존경을 받아야 하지 않는가?

Disdain no man. Better to be disdained by every man than to disdain a single man. For to disdain a man is to disdain the Micro-God within him. To disdain the Micro-God in any man is to disdain Him in yourselves. How shall he ever reach his heaven who scorns his only pilot to that heaven?

어떠한 인간도 무시하지 말라. 한 인간을 무시하는 것보다는 모든 사람에게 무시당하는 쪽이 더 낫다. 한 인간을 무시하는 것은 그의 내면에 있는 작은 신을 무시하는 것이며, 그의 작은 신을 무시하는 것은 자신의 작은 신을 무시하는 것이기 때문이다. 항구로 인도하는 유일한 조타수를 무시하는 자가 어떻게 자신의 항구에 도달할 수 있겠는가?

Look up to see what is below. Look down to see what is above. Descend as much as you ascend; else you lose your balance.

아래에 있는 것을 보기 위해서는 위를 올려다 보라. 위에 있는 것을 보기 위해서는 아래를 내려다 보라. 올라 간 만큼 내려오라. 그렇게 하지 않으면 그대는 균형을 잃고 말 것이다.

Today you are disciples. Tomorrow you shall be teachers. To be good teachers you must remain good disciples.

오늘 그대들은 제자이다. 그리고 내일 그대들은 교사이다. 좋은 교사가 되려면 좋은 제자여야 한다.

Seek not to weed out Evil from the world; for even weeds make good manure.

세상에 있는 악(惡)의 잡초를 베어내려고 하지 말라. 잡초라도 좋은 비료가 될 수 있으니까.

Zeal misapplied too often kills the zealot.

잘못 사용한 열정이 그 열정을 가진 자를 죽이는 일이 너무나 잦다.

Tall and stately trees alone do not make up a forest. Some underbrush and clinging vine are always necessary.

높고 당당한 나무만이 숲을 만드는 것이 아니다. 숲에는 밑에서 사는 관목이나 덩굴도 늘 필요하다.

Hypocrisy may be driven under cover - for a while; it cannot be kept there forever, nor can it be smoked out and exterminate.

아주 잠시동안이라면 위선은 은폐된 상태로 행해질 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 위선은 영구히 유지될 수는 없다. 또 위선을 완전히 없애는 일도 불가능하다.

Dark passions breed and prosper in the dark. Allow them the freedom of light if you would decrease their brood.

음습한 정욕은 어둠 속에서 태어나 번식한다. 그 번식을 막고 싶으면 정욕에 자유의 빛을 주라.

If out of a thousand hypocrites you succeeded in reclaiming one to simple honesty, then great, indeed, is your success.
천 명의 위선자 중 단 한 명이라도 정직한 사람으로 감화시킬 수 있다면, 그때 그대의 성공은 실로 위대하다.

Set a beacon aloft and go not about calling men to see it. Those who are in need of light need no invitation to light.

신호의 횃불을 높이 올려라. 남의 눈에 뜨일 정도로 소리지르며 달려가지 말라. 빛이 필요한 자를 빛으로 초대할 필요는 없다.

Wisdom is a burden to the half-wise as is folly to the fool. Assist the half-wise with his burden and let the fool alone; the half-wise can teach him more that you can.

어리석은 자에게는 어리석음이 집이듯이, 현명한 자에게는 현명함이 집이다. 현명한 자의 짐을 거들어 주고, 어리석은 자는 그대로 놔두라. 현명한 사람은 어리석은 자를 그대보다 능숙하게 가르칠 수 있다.

Often you shall think your road impassable, somber and companionless. Have will and plod along; and round each curve you shall find a new companion.

그대들은 종종 자신의 길이 통행 불능이고 음울하며 동행자가 없다고 생각할 것이다. 그러나 의지를 갖고 계속 걸어라. 그러면 모퉁이를 돌 때마다 새로운 동행자를 발견하게 되리라.

No road in the trackless Space is yet un-traveled. Where the footprints are few and far apart the road is safe and straight, though rough in spots and lonely.자취없는 공간 속에서 아직껏 발길이 닿지 않은 길은 없다. 발자취가 드문 곳은 곳곳마다 험하고 고독하지만 길은 바르고 안전하다.

Guides can show the way to those who would be shown; they cannot force them to walk it.
길잡이는 길을 묻는 자에게 길을 가르쳐 줄 수는 있지만, 그 길을 가도록 강요할 수는 없다.

Remember that you are guides.

그대들이 길잡이 임을 명심하라.

 To guide well on must be well guided. Depend upon your Guide.

잘 인도하기 위해서는 잘 인도 받아야 한다. 그대들의 길잡이에게 부탁하라.

Many shall say to you, 'Show us the way'. But few, too few, shall say, 'Lead us, we pray you, in the way'. On the way to overcoming, the few counts more than the many.

많은 사람들이 그대들에게 '길을 가르쳐 달라'고 말할 것이다. 그러나 '바라노니, 우리를 그 길로 이끌어 주옵소서'라고 하는 자는 극소수 일 것이다. 너무나 극소수일 것이다. 극복을 향한 길에서는 그 소수가 다수보다 중요하다.

Creep where you cannot walk. Walk where you cannot run. Run where you cannot fly. Fly where you cannot bring the whole Universe to a standstill within you.

걸을 수 없는 곳이라면 기어서라도 가라. 달릴 수 없는 곳이라면 걸어가라. 날 수 없는 곳이라면 달려가라. 그리고 날아가라. 온 우주를 자기 안으로 가져와 정지시킬 수 없는 곳이라면.

Not once, nor twice, nor yet a hundred times must you raise the man who stumbles while endeavoring to follow your lead. Keep raising him till he stumbles no more, remembering that you, too, once were babes.

그대들의 안내를 따르려고 악전고투하는 자가 걸려 넘어지면 그대들이 일어나도록 도와 주어야 할 것이다. 한 번, 두 번, 아니 백 번이라도 그들이 일어나도록 도와 주라. 그대 자신도 예전에는 갓난아이였다는 사실을 떠올리면서, 그가 더 이상 넘어지지 않을 때까지 계속해서 일어나도록 도와 주라.

 Anoint your hearts and minds with forgiveness that you may dream anointed dreams.
그대들이 기름부음을 받아 신성해지는 꿈을 꾸듯이, 그대들의 마음과 정신이 '용서'라는 기름으로 신성해지도록 하라.

Life is a fever of varying intensity and kinds, depending on each man s obsession; and men are ever in delirium. Blessed are they who are delirious of Holy Freedom which is the fruit of Holy Understanding.

인생(生)은 하나의 열병이다. 그리고 이 열병의 강도나 종류는  저마다 무엇에 사로잡혀 있는 가에 따라 가지각색이다. 그래서 인간은 늘 망상 속에 있다. '성스러운 이해'의 열매인 '성스러운 자유'의 망상에 사로잡혀 있는 자는 행복하다.

Men's fevers are transmutable. The fever of war may be transmuted into a fever of peace. The fever of hoarding wealth, into a fever of hoarding love. Such is the alchemy of the Spirit which you are called upon the practice and to teach.
인간의 열병은 변할 수 있다. 전쟁의 열병이 평화의 열병으로 바뀔 수도 있다. 부를 축적하는 열병이 사랑을 축적하는 열병으로 바뀔 수도 있다. 그대들이 실천하고 가르침을 구하는 영(靈)이 행하는 연금술이 바로 그러한 것이다.

Preach Life to the dying, and to the living, Death. But to those who yearn to overcome preach deliverance from both.

죽어가는 자에게는 '생'을, 살아있는 자에게는 '죽음'을 설교하라. 그렇지만 극복을 갈망하는 자에게는 이 두 가지로부터의 해방을 설교하라.

Vast is the difference between 'holding' and 'being held'. You hold, only what you love. What you hate holds you. Avoid being held.

'소유하는 것'과 '소유당하는 것'의 차이는 크다. 그대들은 자신이 사랑하는 것만을 소유한다. 그리고 그대들이 증오하는 것이 그대들을 소유한다. 소유당하는 것을 피하라.

More earths than one are spinning their courses across the voids of Time and Space. Yours is the youngest of the family, and a very lusty babe she is.

시간과 공간의 허공에서는 하나 이상의 행성이 자신의 궤도를 돌고 있다. 이 지구는 그 행성 중에서 가장 젊고 원기왕성한 아기이다.

A still motion - what a paradox! Yet that is the motion o f the worlds in God.

정지해 있는 운동 - 이 얼마나 멋진 역설인가? 그러나 이것이 신의 세계에서의 운동이다.

Look at the fingers on your hands if you would know how unequal things can be equal.
평등하지 못한 것이 어떻게 평등해지는지를 알고 싶다면, 손가락을 보라.

 Chance is the plaything of the wise. Fools are the playthings of Chance.

'우연한 기회' 는 현명한 자에게는 장난감이다. 그러나 어리석은 자는 그 자신이 '우연한 기회'의 장난감이 된다.

 Never complain of anything. To complain of a thing is to make of it a scourge for the complainer. To endure it well is to scourge it well. But to understand it is to make of it a faithful servant.

어떤 것에도 불평하지 말라. 불평은 불평하는 자에게는 재앙이 된다. 불평을 채찍질하는 것은 재앙을 연장시키는 일이다. 그러나 불평을 이해하면, 그 불평은 그대의 충실한 하인이 된다.

It often happens that a hunter aiming, say, at a roe would miss the roe and kill a hare of whose presence he was entirely unaware. A wise hunter will say in such a case,  'It was really the hare I had aimed at, and not the roe. And I got my quarry.'

사냥꾼이 사슴을 겨냥해 쏘았지만 사슴은 맞추지 못하고, 대신 그 존재를 전혀 느끼지 못했던 산토끼를 잡는 일이 흔히 있다. 그런 경우 현명한 사냥꾼은 '내가 정말 겨누고 있던 것은 사슴이 아니라 산토끼였다. 나는 내가 노렸던 사냥감을 얻었다'하고 말할 것이다.

Aim well, and any result is a good result.

잘 겨냥하라.  그러면 어떤 결과든 좋은 결과가 된다.

What comes to you is yours. What delays in coming is not worth waiting for. Let it do the waiting.

그대들에게 오는 것은 그대들의 것이다. 오는 것이 늦어진다면 기다릴 가치가 없다. 그냥 내버려 두라.

 You never miss an aim, if what you aim at aims at you. An aim missed is always an aim attained. Let your hearts be Disappointment-proof.
만약 그대가 목표로 한 것이 그대를 노리고 있다면 결코 그것을 놓치지 말라. 빗나간 겨냥은 언제라도 할 수 있는 겨냥이다. 그대들 마음이 어떤 실망도 받지 않도록 하라.

Disappointment is the kite hatched out by flabby hearts and brought up on the carrions of their hopes miscarried.

실망이란 연약한 마음에 의해 올려진 연이다. 그 연은 이루지 못한 희망의 썩은 살로 양육된다.

A hope fulfilled becomes the mother of many stillborn hopes.

하나의 희망이 실현될 때는 다른 많은 희망이 유산되고 만다.

Beware of giving your hearts in marriage unto Hope if you would not convert them into graveyards.

만약 마음을 무덤으로 바꾸고 싶지 않다면, 그대 마음을 희망과 억지로 연결시키지 않도록 주의하라.

 One out of a hundred eggs spawned by a fish may come to fruition. Yet are the ninety-nine not wasted. So prodigal and so discriminately indiscriminate is Nature. Be you likewise prodigal and discriminately indiscriminate in sowing your hearts and minds in the hearts and minds of men.

물고기가 낳은 백 개의 알 중, 자라서 물고기가 되는 것은 하나가 될까 말까이다. 그렇다고 해서 나머지 아흔 아홉 개의 알이 쓸데없는 것은 아니다. 자연은 식별력이 있는 동시에 무차별적이다. 그대들 역시 다른 사람의 마음과 정신에 그대들의 마음과 정신을 심을 때는 식별력이 있으면서도 무차별적으로 하라.

Seek no reward for any labour done. The labour itself is reward sufficient to the laborer who loves his labour.

어떠한 노동에 대한 보수에 연연해서는 안된다. 진정으로 노동을 사랑하는 자에게는 노동 그 자체가 충분한 보수이다.

Remember the Creative Word and the Perfect Balance. When you have reached that Balance through Holy Understanding, than only shall you have become overcomers, and then shall your hands collaborate with the hands of God.

'창조의 언어'와 '완전한 균형'을 명심하라. '성스러운 이해'를 통해 '완전한 균형'에 도달할 때에만, 그대들은 극복자가 되고 그대들의 손이 신의 손과 협력하여 일하게 된다.

 May the peace and stillness of this night vibrate in you until you drown them in the stillness  and the peace of Holy Understanding.

그대들이 '성스러운 이해'의 평화와 정적으로 이 밤의 평화와 정적을 압도시킬 때까지, 그리고 이 밤의 평화와 정적이 그대들 속에 울려 퍼지기를......
