17. Beyond All
모든 것을 넘어
The man who is happy and pure
And likes his own company
Gathers the fruit of his practice
And the fruit of wisdom.
행복하고 순수한 사람,
자신 자신과 벗하기를 좋아하는 사람은
자기 수행의 열매와
지혜의 열매를 거두네.
Ashtavakra said:
He who is content, with purified senses, and always enjoys solitude, has gained the fruit of knowledge and the fruit of the practice of yoga too. 17.1
The man who knows the truth
Is never unhappy in the world.
진리를 아는 사람은
세상 속에서도 결코 슬픔에 물들지 않네.
For he alone fills the universe.
그것은 그 홀로 우주를 채운 까닭.
The knower of truth is never distressed in this world, for the whole round world is full of himself alone. 17.2
Just as the elephant loves
The leaves of the sallaki tree,
But not the neem tree,
So the man who loves himself
Always spurns the senses.
통증을 없애주는
살라키 나무 잎을 좋아하는 코끼리는
만병통치약으로 쓰이는 니임 잎을 사랑하지 않듯
자기 자신을 사랑하는 사람은
늘 감각적인 것들을 일축한다네.
None of these senses please a man who has found satisfaction within, just as Nimba leaves do not please the elephant that has acquired the taste for Sallaki leaves. 17.3
It is hard to find
A man who has no desire
For what he has not tasted,
Or who tastes the world
And is untouched.
경험하지 않은 대상에 대해서도
경험한 세상에 대해서도 물들지 않은,
욕망이 모두 사라진 사람은
찾기 어렵네.
The man is rare who is not attached to the things he has enjoyed, and does not hanker after the things he has not enjoyed. 17.4
Here in the world
Some crave pleasure,
Some seek freedom.
이 세상 속에서
더러는 쾌락을 갈망하고
더러는 자유를 추구하지만.
But it is hard to find
A man who wants neither.
그 둘 모두를 원하지 않는 사람은
찾기 어렵네.
He is a great soul.
그는 위대한 영혼.
Those who desire pleasure and those who desire liberation are both found in samsara, but the great-souled man who desires neither pleasure nor liberation is rare indeed. 17.5
It is hard to find
A man who has an open mind,
Who neither seeks nor shuns
Wealth or pleasure,
Duty or liberation,
Life or death. . .
부귀나 쾌락을,
찾지도 않고 피하지도 않는 이,
속박이나 해탈을,
찾지도 않고 피하지도 않는 이,
삶이나 죽음을,
찾지도 않고 피하지도 않는 이,
그런 열린 마음을 가진 이는
찾기 어렵네.
It is only the noble-minded who is free from attraction or repulsion to religion, wealth, sensuality, and life and death too. 17.6
He does not want the world to end.
He does not mind if it lasts.
그는 세상이 끝나기를 원하지도 않고
세상이 지속된다 해도 마음 쓰지 않네.
Whatever befalls him,
He lives in happiness.
자신에게 무엇이 닥쳐오든
그는 행복하게 살아가네.
For he is truly blessed.
그는 진정 신성하기에.
He feels no desire for the elimination of all this, nor anger at its continuing, so the fortunate man lives happily with whatever sustinence presents itself. 17.7
Now that he understands,
He is fulfilled.
His mind is drawn within,
And he is fulfilled.
이제 그는 자신을 알아
일을 마쳤네.
마음을 안으로 소멸시켰기에
일을 마쳤네.
He sees and he hears,
He touches and smells and tastes,
And he is happy.
(마음 없이) 보고 듣고,
만지고, 냄새 맡고 맛보기에,
그는 행복하네.
Thus fulfilled through this knowledge, contented, and with the thinking mind emptied, he lives happily just seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting. 17.8
Whatever he does is without purpose.
His senses have been stilled.
His eyes are empty.
무엇을 하든 의도하는 바 없네.
감각들은 여전히 남아 있지만
눈은 비었네.
He is without desire or aversion.
그에게는 집착도 혐오도 없네.
For him the waters of the world
Have all dried up!
그에게는 세상의 물들(윤회의 바다)이
모두 말라버렸네.
In him for whom the ocean of samsara has dried up, there is neither attachment or aversion. His gaze is vacant, his behaviour purposeless, and his senses inactive. 17.9
He is not asleep.
He is not awake.
He never closes his eyes
Or opens them.
그는 잠들어있지도 않고
깨어있지도 않네.
결코 눈을 감는 법도 없고
뜨는 법도 없다네.
Wherever he is,
He is beyond everything.
He is free.
어디에 있든지
그는 모든 것을 넘어서 있네.
그는 자유롭네.
Surely the supreme state is everywhere for the liberated mind. He is neither awake nor asleep, and neither opens nor closes his eyes. 17.10
And the man who is free
Always lives in his heart.
His heart is always pure.
자유로운 사람은
언제나 가슴으로 살아가네.
그의 가슴은 늘 순수하다네.
Whatever happens,
He is free of all desires.
어떤 일이 벌어져도
그는 모든 욕망들로부터 자유롭네.
The liberated man is resplendent everywhere, free from all desires. Everywhere he appears self-possessed and pure of heart. 17.11
Whatever he sees or hears or touches,
Whatever he smells or tastes,
Whatever he acquires,
He is free.
무엇을 보거나 듣거나 만지거나
무엇을 냄새 맡거나 맛보거나
무엇을 얻거나
그는 자유롭네.
Free from striving,
And from stillness.
애씀으로부터도 자유롭고,
고요함으로부터도 자유롭네.
For indeed he is a great soul.
그것은 진정 그가 위대한 영혼인 까닭.
Seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting, speaking, and walking about, the great-souled man who is freed from trying to achieve or avoid anything is free indeed. 17.12
Without blame or praise,
Anger or rejoicing.
비난도 칭찬도
화도 기쁨도 동반하지 않아.
He gives nothing.
He takes nothing.
무엇을 취하는 법도 없고
무엇을 버리는 법도 없다네.
He wants nothing,
Nothing at all.
그는 아무 것도 바라지 않네.
그 무엇도.
The liberated man is free from desires everywhere. He neither blames, praises, rejoices, is disappointed, gives, nor takes. 17.13
And whoever draws near him,
A woman full of passion
Or Death Himself,
He is not shaken.
열정에 찬여인이 다가오든
자신의 죽음이 닥쳐오든,
그 누가 가까이로 끌어도
그는 흔들리지 않네.
He stays in his heart.
He is free indeed!
그는 자신의 가슴에 머무르네.
그는 진정 자유롭다네.
When a great-souled one is unperturbed in mind, and equally self-possessed at either the sight of a woman inflamed with desire or at approaching death, he is truly liberated. 17.14
It is all the same to him.
Man or woman,
Good fortune or bad,
Happiness or sorrow.
남자도 여자도
행운도 불행도
행복도 슬픔도
그에게는 모두 같다네.
It makes no difference.
He is serene.
아무런 차이도 일으키지 못하기에
그는 평화롭다네.
There is no distinction between pleasure and pain, man and woman, success and failure for the wise man who looks on everything as equal. 17.15
The world no longer holds him.
He has gone beyond
The bounds of human nature.
세상은 더 이상 그를 붙들어 놓지 못하네.
그는 인간성의 한계너머로
사라져버렸네.
Without compassion
Or the wish to harm,
Without pride or humility.
연민도 악의도 없고,
긍지도 겸손도 없어.
Nothing disturbs him.
Nothing surprises him.
그 무엇도
그를 어지럽게 하지 못하고
그 무엇도
그를 놀라게 할 수 없네.
There is no aggression nor compassion, no pride nor humility, no wonder nor confusion for the man whose days of samsara are over. 17.16
Because he is free,
He neither craves nor disdains
The things of the world.
자유롭기에, 그는
세상사를
갈망하지도 않고 외면하지도 않네.
He takes them as they come.
일이 벌어지면
그 일을 받아들일 뿐.
His mind is always detached.
그의 마음은 늘 무심하다네.
The liberated man is not averse to the senses nor is he attached to them. He enjoys himself continually with an unattached mind in both success and failure. 17.17
His mind is empty.
He is not concerned with meditation,
Or the absence of it,
Or the struggle between good and evil.
그의 마음은 비어있네.
명상하는 것도
명상하지 않는 것도
선악(善惡) 간의 갈등도
이제 그와는 관계없네.
He is beyond all,
Alone.
그는 모든 것을 넘어서
홀로 있네.
One established in the Absolute state with an empty mind does not know the alternatives of inner stillness and lack of inner stillness, and of good and evil. 17.18
No "I,"
No "mine."
‘나’라는 것도 없고
‘내 것’이라는 것도 없네.
He knows there is nothing.
그는 아네.
거기엔 아무 것도 없다는 것을.
All his inner desires have melted away.
그의 모든 내적인 욕망들은 녹아 사라졌네.
Whatever he does,
He does nothing.
어떤 일을 해도
그는 전혀 한 일이 없네.
A man free of "me" and "mine" and of a sense of responsibility, aware that "Nothing exists," with all desires extinguished within, does not act even in acting. 17.19
His mind has stopped working!
It has simply melted away. . .
그의 마음은 작동을 멈추었네.
그냥 녹아서 사라져 버렸네.
And with it,
Dreams and delusions and dullness.
그리고 마음과 함께
꿈들도 망상들도 우둔함[無智]도 사라졌네.
And for what he has become,
There is no name.
이제 무엇이 그의 경지를 어울릴까.
거기엔 이름마저도 없는데.
He whose thinking mind is dissolved achieves the indescribable state and is free from the mental display of delusion, dream, and ignorance. 17.20
