Be quick to do good.
If you are slow,
The mind, delighting in mischief,
Will catch you.
서둘러 선을 행하라
만일 그대가 느리면
악에 머무르는 것을 기뻐하는 마음이
뒤따라 달려와 그대를 붙잡으리니.

Turn away from mischief.
Again and again, turn away.
Before sorrow befalls you.
악을 멀리하라
거듭 거듭 멀리하라
슬픔이 그대에게 닥치기 전에

Set your heart on doing good.
Do it over and over again,
And you will be filled with joy.
선(善)을 행하는 데 마음을 두라
거듭 거듭 그렇게 하라
그러면 기쁨이 그대를 채우리니

A fool is happy
Until his mischief turns against him.
And a good man may suffer
Until his goodness flowers.
어리석은 자는 행복해한다
그가 지은 악이 자신에게 되돌아오기 전까지는.
착한 사람도 종종 고통을 받는다
그가 지은 선(善)이 꽃을 피우기 전까지는.

Do not make light of your failings,
Saying, "What are they to me?"
A jug fills drop by drop.
So the fool becomes brimful of folly.
그것이 사소한 잘못이라 해서
"이런 것쯤이야 어떠랴?" 라고 말하지 말라.
한 방울 두 방울 떨어지는 물방울이 결국 단지를 채우듯이
어리석은 자는 사소한 잘못을 쌓아
자신을 어리석음으로 가득 채운다.

Do not belittle your virtues,
Saying, "They are nothing."
A jug fills drop by drop.
So the wise man becomes brimful of virtue.
그것이 작은 선(善)이라 하여
"별 것 아닌데." 라고 말하지 말라.
한 방울 두 방울 떨어지는 물방울이 결국 단지를 채우듯이
지혜로운 이는 작은 선행들을 모아
자신을 지혜로 가득 채운다.

As the rich merchant with few servants
Shuns a dangerous road
And the man who loves life shuns poison,
Beware the dangers of folly and mischief.
수행인이 적은 부유한 상인이
위험한 길을 꺼리듯
삶을 사랑하는 사람이 독약을 멀리하듯
어리석음의 위험들과 악을 경계하라.

For an unwounded hand may handle poison.
The innocent come to no harm.
그것은 상처 없는 손에는 독이 스며들지 못하듯
순수한 사람에게는 해악이 다가오지 못하기 때문이라.

But as dust thrown against the wind,
Mischief is blown back in the face
Of the fool who wrongs the pure and harmless.
하지만 역으로 부는 바람에 실려오는 먼지처럼
악은 순수하고 악의가 없는 것을 더럽히는 어리석은 이의
얼굴로 되돌아와 악한 자의 얼굴을 때린다.

Some are reborn in hell,
Some in this world,
The good in heaven.
But the pure are not reborn.
그렇게 하여 악한 자의
일부는 지옥에 다시 태어나고,
일부는 이 세상에 다시 태어나고
선한 사람은 하늘나라에 다시 태어난다.
그러나 순수한 사람은 다시 태어나지 않는다.

Nowhere!
Not in the sky,
Nor in the midst of the sea,
Nor deep in the mountains,
Can you hide from your own mischief.
그 어디에도!
하늘에도
바다 속에도
깊은 산 속 그 어디에도
자신이 지은 죄는 감출 수 없다.

Not in the sky,
Not in the midst of the ocean,
Nor deep in the mountains,
Nowhere
Can you hide from your own death.
하늘에도
바다 속에도
깊은 산 속 그 어디에도
그 어디에도
죽음으로부터 피할 수 있는 곳은 없다.
