Better than a thousand hollow words
Is one word that brings peace.
천 마디의 공허한 말보다는
평안을 주는 한 마디의 말이 더 낫다네.

Better than a thousand hollow verses
Is one verse that brings peace.
천 마디의 공허한 말보다는
평안을 주는 한 구절의 시(詩)가 더 낫다네.

Better than a hundred hollow lines
Is one line of the dharma, bringing peace.
공허한 백 구절보다
평안을 주는 진리의 말씀 한 구절이 더 낫다네.

It is better to conquer yourself
Than to win a thousand battles.

전쟁에서 천 번을 이기는 것보다
자기 자신을 정복하는 것이 더 낫다네.

Then the victory is yours.
그럴 때 승리는 그대의 것

It cannot be taken from you,
Not by angels or by demons,
Heaven or hell.
그러면 천사도 악마도
천국도 지옥도
그대가 얻은 것을 빼앗지 못하리라.

Better than a hundred years of worship,
Better than a thousand offerings,
Better than giving up a thousand worldly ways
In order to win merit,
Better even than tending in the forest
A sacred flame for a hundred years -
Is one moment's reverence
For the man who has conquered himself.
신을 백년 숭배하는 것보다
교회나 절에 천 번 헌금을 바치는 것보다
세속적인 길을 천 번 포기하는 것보다
공덕을 쌓기 위해서
숲에서 백년동안 성스러운 불꽃을 돌보는 것보다
자기 자신을 정복한 사람에 대해
한 순간이나마 공경심을 품는 것이 더 낫다네.

To revere such a man,
A master old in virtue and holiness,
Is to have victory over life itself,
And beauty, strength and happiness.
오랜 수행으로 덕이 있고
영적으로 순결하고 청정(淸淨)한 스승,
그런 이를 공경하고 따르는 것이
바로 삶 그 자체를 극복하는 승리이며
그리고 아름다움과 용기와 행복.

Better than a hundred years of mischief
Is one day spent in contemplation.
번뇌로 백년을 사는 것보다
명상으로 보내는 하루가 더 낫다네.

Better than a hundred years of ignorance
Is one day spent in reflection.
무지 속에서 마음대로 사는 백년보다
차분히 반성하며 돌아보며 사는 하루가 더 낫다네.

Better than a hundred years of idleness
Is one day spent in determination.
빈둥거리면서 사는 백년보다
착한 결심을 하고 사는 하루가 더 낫다네.

Better to live one day
Wondering
How all things arise and pass away.
Better to live one hour
Seeing
The one life beyond the way.
Better to live one moment
In the moment
Of the way beyond the way.
빈둥거리면서 보내는 하루보다
모든 사물이 어떻게 오고 가는지
숙고하는 것이 낫고
빈둥거리면서 보내는 한 시간보다
길을 넘어가신
성인의 삶을 읽는 것이 나으며,
한 순간을 살더라도
길을 넘어선
찰라(刹那)의 깨달음을 경험하는 것이 귀하네.

* 아침에 도를 들으면 저녁에 죽어도 좋으리.
