All beings tremble before violence.
All fear death.
All love life.
살아있는 모든 존재는 폭력 앞에서는 두려워 떤다.
우리 모두는 죽음을 두려워한다.
우리 모두는 삶을 사랑한다.

See yourself in other.
Then whom can you hurt?
What harm can you do?
서로의 처지를 바꾸어서보라.
그러면 누구를 아프게 할 수 있으며
누구에게 해악을 끼칠 수 있으리오?

He who seeks happiness
By hurting those who seek happiness
Will never find happiness.
행복을 구하는 사람이
행복을 구하는 다른 사람의 마음을 아프게 한다면
그는 결코 행복을 찾지 못하리라.

For your brother is like you.
He wants to be happy.
Never harm him
And when you leave this life
You too will find happiness.
그것은 그대의 형제 역시 그대처럼
행복해지기를 원하기 때문이니
결코 남을 해롭게 하는 일을 하지 말라.
그래야 그대가이 삶을 마칠 때
그대 역시 행복을 얻을 수 있을 것이기에,

Never speak harsh words
For they will rebound upon you.
Angry words hurt
And the hurt rebounds.
거친 말, 자비롭지 않은 말을 하지 말아라
그렇게 하면 그 말이 다시 네게로 돌아오리니.
화가 나서 하는 말은 먼저 듣는 사람을 아프게 하고
나중에 되돌아와 그대를 아프게 한다.

Like a broken gong
Be still, and silent.
Know the stillness of freedom
Where there is no more striving.
부서진징처럼
고요하라, 침묵하라.
여여(如如)한 해탈의 경지를 알라.
더 이상 대립과 갈등이 없는 그 자리를 알라.

Like herdsmen driving their cows into the fields,
Old age and death will drive you before them.
But the fool in his mischief forgets
And he lights the fire
Wherein one day he must burn.
목부(牧夫)들이 그들의 소 떼를 몰고 들판으로 가듯
흐르는 세월이 시시각각 그대를 죽음 앞으로 데리고 가지만
어리석은 이는 죄를 짓고도 대수롭지 않게 생각하다가
때가되면 자기가 피운 그 죄악의 불에 탄다.

He who harms the harmless
Or hurts the innocent,
Ten times shall he fall -
어진 사람에게 해를 끼친 사람이나
착한 사람에게 상처를 준 사람은
자신이 저지른 짓의 열 배를 받게 되리니.

Into torment or infirmity,
Injury or disease or madness,
Persecution or fearful accusation,
Loss of family, loss of fortune.
(살아서는)
몸과 마음의 고통을 겪고, 쇠약해지기도 하고,
다치고, 병들고, 미쳐 버리기도 하고
수모를 당하고, 벌벌 떨며 고발을 당하기도 하고
가족을 잃기도 하고 운이 다하기도 한다.

Fire from heaven shall strike his house
And when his body has been struck down,
He shall rise in hell.
(그리고 죽어서는)
하늘로부터 내린 불벼락이 그의 집(몸)을 때려
그의 몸은 산산이 부수어져 버린 다음
지옥에 던져지리라.

He who goes naked,
With matted hair, mud bespattered,
Who fasts and sleeps on the ground
And smears his body with ashes
And sits in endless meditation -
So long as he is not free from doubts,
He will not find freedom.
나체로 지내거나
헝클어진 머리로 진흙탕에 뒹굴며 살거나
단식하고 길거리에 뒹굴며 살거나
몸에 온통 재를 묻힌 채 살거나
한없이 앉아서 명상한다해도
의혹들로부터 자유로워지지 못한다면,
그는 해탈을 얻지 못하리라.

But he who lives purely and self-assured,
In quietness and virtue,
Who is without harm or hurt or blame,
Even if he wears fine clothes,
So long as he also has faith,
He is a true seeker.
하지만 스스로의 굳은 결의로 단정하게
침묵의 평온함과 선행 속에서
그 누구도 해롭게 하거나 상처를 주거나 비난하지 않는다면
비록 좋은 옷을 입고있다 하더라고
그런 믿음을 간직하고 있는 한
그는 진정한 구도자인 것이니.

A noble horse rarely
Feels the touch of the whip.
Who is there in this world as blameless?
Then like a noble horse
Smart under the whip.
Burn and be swift.
Believe, meditate, see.
Be harmless, be blameless.
Awake to the dharma.
And from all sorrows free yourself.
좋은 말이 채찍 소리를 듣는 일이 드물듯
누가 이 세상을 그렇게 흠 없이 살아가리오?
그대여

그대는 좋은 말이 채찍의 소리만 들려도 내달리듯
그렇게 믿고 명상하고 보라.
어질어지고 순결해지라.
진리에 대해 깨어
모든 고통과 슬픔으로부터 자기 자신을 해방하라.

The farmer channels water to his land.
The fletcher whittles his arrows.
The carpenter turns his wood.
And the wise man masters himself.
농부는 자신의 땅에 도랑을 내서 물을 대고
활 만드는 이는 화살을 깎고 목수는 나무를 다듬지만.
지혜로운 이는 자기 자신을 다스리나니.
