Love yourself and watch -
Today, tomorrow, always.
그대 자신을 사랑하고 그대 자신을 주시(注視)하라
오늘도 내일도 언제까지나

First establish yourself in the way,
Then teach,
And so defeat sorrow.
먼저 그대의 갈 길을 바로 세우고 난 후에
남을 가르쳐라
그런 다음 슬픔을 이겨내라

To straighten the crooked
You must first do a harder thing -
Straighten yourself.
비틀린 것을 바르게 펴려면
먼저 어려운 일을 잘 극복해야 하나니
그것은 바로 그대 자신을 바르게 펴는 것

You are your only master.
Who else?
Subdue yourself,
And discover your master.
그대만이 오직 그대의 주인
그대 외에 그 누가 있겠는가
그대 자신을 정복하여
그대의 주인이 누구인지를 깨달아라

Wilfully you have fed
Your own mischief.
Soon it will crush you
As the diamond crushes stone.
자기 멋대로 살면서
악을 키워 나가면
그 악이 곧 그대를 부수리
금강석이 돌을 부수듯

By your own folly
You will be brought as low
As you worst enemy wishes.
So the creeper chokes the tree.
어리석음에 따라 살면

스스로의 어리석음으로 인해
그대는 적이 바라는 대로 타락하게 되리라.
덩굴이 나무의 숨통을 끊듯이

How hard it is to serve yourself,
How easy to lose yourself
In mischief and folly.
자기 자신을 위해 노력하기란 얼마나 어려운가
악함과 어리석음 속에서
자기 자신을 잃어버리기란 얼마나 쉬운가.

The kashta reed dies when it bears fruit.
So the fool,
Scorning the teachings of the awakened,
Spurning those who follow the dharma,
Perishes when his folly flowers.
꽃을 피우면 곧 죽고 마는 대나무처럼
어리석은 사람은
성인의 가르침을 비방하고
바른 법을 따르는 사람을 경멸하나니
그 어리석음이 꽃을 피우면
자신 스스로 자신이 지은 죄를 받으리.

Mischief is yours.
Sorrow is yours.
But virtue is also yours,
And purity.
악이 그대의 것이라면
슬픔도 그대의 것.
하지만 선행(善行)이 바로 그대의 것이라면
순수함또한 그대의 것임을.

You are the source
Of all purity and impurity.
바로 그대 자신이
모든 순수함과 부도덕의 근원

No one purifies another.
그 누구도 남을 깨끗하게 정화할 수 없으니

Never neglect your work
For another's,
However great his need.
다른 사람의 일이 아무리 소중하다 해도
그대 자신의 일을 게을리 하지 말라.

Your work is to discover your work
And then with all your heart
To give yourself to it.
그대의 일이란
그대의 일을깨닫는 것
온 마음을 다해서
그 일에 그대 자신의 모든 것을 바쳐라.
