How long the night to the watchman,
How long the road to the weary traveller,
How long the wandering of many lives
To the fool who misses the way.
잠 못드는 자에게 밤은 얼마나 지루한가?
고단한 여행자에게 길은 얼마나 머나먼가?
길을 잃은 어리석은 이에게
수많은 생[輪回]의 방랑은 얼마나 고단한가?

If the traveller cannot find
Master or friend to go with him,
Let him travel alone
Rather than with a fool for company.
삶의 여행길에 함께 할
좋은 스승이나 친구를 찾지 못한다면
어리석은 이들과 길동무하기 보다
차라리 혼자서 올바른 길을 지켜 나아가라

"My children, my wealth!"
So the fool troubles himself.
But how has he children or wealth?
He is not even his own master.
어리석은 이들은
이 아이들은 내 자녀, 이것은 내 재산이라 말하면서
스스로 고통의 멍에를 짊어진다.
하지만 심지어 자기 자신의 몸마저도
주인이 아니기에 자기 마음대로 하지 못하는데
어떻게 아이들과 재산을 소유할 수 있단 말인가?

The fool who knows he is a fool
Is that much wiser.
The fool who thinks he is wise
Is a fool indeed.
자기 자신이 어리석다는 것을 안
어리석은 이는 자신의 어리석음을 알아차린 자이지만,
자기 자신이 똑똑하다고 생각하는
어리석은 이는 참으로 어리석은 자이니.

Does the spoon taste the soup?
A fool may live all his life
In the company of a master
And still miss the way.
국자가 국 맛을 모르듯
어리석은 이는 살아가며 평생동안
자신을 가르치는 제각각의 스승 집단과 어울리면서도
여전히 길[道]을 잃고 방황한다.

역자주) 우리가 살아가면서 만나는 모든 사람은
좋든 싫든 간에 어떤 깨달음을 주기 위한 우리의 스승이다.

The tongue tastes the soup.
If you are awake in the presence of a master
One moment will show you the way.
하지만 혀가 국 맛을 느끼듯
스승의 현존 속에서 깨어있을 수 있는 사람은
한순간에 바로 길[道]을 보게 된다.

The fool is his own enemy.
The mischief is his undoing.
How bitterly he suffers!
어리석음이 자기 자신의 적이며
자신의 그릇된 생각이나 행동으로 인해 파멸하니
아무리 고통스럽다한들 누구를 원망하리.

Why do what you will regret?
Why bring tears upon yourself?
왜 후회할 짓을 하려고 하는가?
왜 스스로에게 눈물을 가져오는 짓을 행하려고 하는가?

Do only what you do not regret,
And fill yourself with joy.
그대여, 오직 후회하지 않은 짓만을 하여
스스로를 기쁨으로 채워라.

For a while the fool's mischief
Tastes sweet, sweet as honey.
Bit in the end it turns bitter.
And how bitterly he suffers!
어리석은 자의 그릇된 행동은
잠시동안은 꿀처럼 달콤하리라.
하지만 마침내는 쓰라린 고통으로 변하리니
그때 아무리 고통스럽다한들 누구를 원망하리.

For months the fool may fast,
Eating from the tip of a grass blade.
Still he is not worth a penny
Beside the master whose food is the way.
풀잎만 씹으며 몇 달씩 고행을 한다해도
어리석은 자의 그런 짓은 한 푼의 가치도 없으리
길[道] 그 자체가 음식인 지혜로운 스승 앞에서는.

Fresh milk takes time to sour.
So a fool's mischief
Takes time to catch up with him.
Like the embers of a fire
It smoulders within him.
신선한 우유가 상하는데
시간이 걸리듯
어리석은 자의 그릇된 짓도
타다 남은 불처럼 어리석은 자 속에 숨어 있다가
그를 따라잡아 파멸로 이끄는데는 시간이 걸리리라.

Whatever a fool learns,
It only makes him duller.
Knowledge cleaves his head.
어리석은 자는 무엇을 배워도
스스로를 점점 더 어리석게 만들뿐이니
그릇된 지식은 자기 자신의 머리를 쪼개리라.

For then he wants recognition.
A place before other people,
A place over other people.
"Let them know my work,
Let everyone look to me for direction."
그것은 그런 그릇된 지식으로 그 다음에는
남들이 알아주기를 바라기에
남보다 앞자리를 차지하고, 남보다 높은 자리에 앉아서
남들이 내가 행한 일을 알기 바라고
모든 이들이 자신의 뜻대로 되기 바라기 때문이니.

Such are his desires,
Such is his swelling pride.
오, 이런 것들이
어리석은 자의 욕망이며
이런 것들이 어리석은 자의 부푼 긍지로다.

One way leads to wealth and fame,
The other to the end of the way.
한길은 부와 명성을 따르는 길,
다른길은 덧없는 욕망을 버리고
고통스러운 윤회를 끝내는 열반으로 향한 길.

Look not for recognition
But follow the awakened
And set yourself free.
오 그대여,
남이 알아주기를 구하지 말고
잠에서 깨어난 지혜로운 이를 스승으로 삼아
다만그대 자신을 자유롭게 할지니라.
