그대는 울었다......나의 슬픔에.

그리고 나도 울었다.

그대의 동정이 뼈에 사무쳐.

하지만 그대는 자기의 슬픔에 운 것이 아니었다.

다만 그것을 자기 속에서 보았을 뿐이다.

4.The True Seeker

진정한 구도자

The wise man knows the Self, 1

And he plays the game of life.

지혜로운 이는 진정한 자신을 알기에

삶을 유희(遊戱)로서 즐기지만

But the fool lives in the world

Like a beast of burden.

어리석은 이는 등짐을 진 짐승처럼

이 세상에 얽매여 살아가네.

역자주 : 여기서 등짐은 업(業)을 의미한다.

Ashtavakra said:

The wise person of self-knowledge, playing the game of worldly enjoyment, bears no resemblance whatever to samsara's bewildered beasts of burden. 4.1

The true seeker feels no elation

Even in that exalted state

Which Indra and all the gods

Unhappily long for.

진정한 구도자는

심지어 지복의 경지에 들더라도

득의만만해 하지 않네.

공교롭게도 제석천과 모든 신들은

바라마지 않는 경지이지만.

역자주 : 제석천 - 불교의 수호신으로 고대 인도의 신 인드라(Indra)를 수용한 것이다.

석제환인다라(釋帝桓因陀羅)·석가제바인다라(釋迦提婆因陀羅)로 음역하고

줄여서 석제환인·제석천이라 한다. 제(帝)는 인드라의 의역이고, 석(釋)은 샤크라의 음역이다.

욕계 제2천인 도리천의 주인이다.

Truly the yogi feels no excitement even at being established in that state

which all the Devas from Indra down yearn for disconsolately. 4.2

He understands the nature of things. 3

그는 사물의 참다운 본성을 이해했네.

His heart is not smudged

By right or wrong,

As the sky is not smudged by smoke.

그의 가슴은

허공이 연기에 물들지 않듯

선악에 물들지 않네.

He who has known That is untouched within by good deeds or bad,

just as space is not touched by smoke, however much it may appear to be. 4.3

He is pure of heart, 4

He knows the whole world is only the Self.

가슴의 순수함으로

그는 온 세상이 다만 진아(眞我)의 현현일 뿐임을 아네.

So who can stop him

From doing as he wishes?

그러니 행위에 걸림 없이 사는 그를

그 누가 막을 수 있으리.

Who can prevent the great-souled person

who has known this whole world as himself from living as he pleases? 4.4

Of the four kinds of being, 5

From Brahma to a blade of grass,

Only the wise man is strong enough

To give up desire and aversion.

범천(梵天)에서 풀잎에 이르는

네 부류의 존재 중에서

부족 없이 강한 이는

오직 욕망과 혐오를 항복받은 지혜로운 이.

역자주 : Brahma - 1. a Hindu god, in later Hindu tradition,

the Creator who, with Vishnu, the Preserver, and Shiva, the Destroyer,

constitutes the triad known as the Trimurti.

2. another name for Brahman.

Of all four categories of beings, from Brahma down to the last clump of grass,

only the man of knowledge is capable of eliminating desire and aversion. 4.5

How rare he is!

얼마나 드문 이 인가?

Knowing he is the Self,

He acts accordingly

And is never fearful.

진정한 자신을 알고서

그에 맞추어 적절하게 행동하고

두려움이라고는 찾아볼 수 없으니.

For he knows he is the Self,

One without two,

The Lord of all creation.

그것은 그가 둘 없는 하나[一者, 本來面目]이자

모든 창조물의 주님인

진정한 자신[眞我]을 아는 까닭.

Rare is the man who knows himself as the nondual Lord of the world,

and he who knows this is not afraid of anything. 4.6
