I shall endure harsh words
As the elephant endures the shafts of battle.
For many people speak wildly.
누가 나에게 그 어떤 가혹한 말을 한다해도
나는 견뎌내리라.
마치 코끼리가 전쟁터의 화살을 견뎌내듯이.
그것은 터무니없는 말을 하는 이가 많은 까닭이라네.

The tamed elephant goes to battle.
The king rides him.
The tamed man is the master.
He can endure hard words in peace.
길들여진 코끼리는
왕이 그 코끼리를 타고서 전쟁터로 나아가네.
자신을 잘 제어할 줄 아는 온순한 사람은
(자기 마음의) 주인이기에,
아무리 심한 말을 들어도
고요히 그 말을 참고 받아들이네.

Better than a mule
Or the fine horses of Sindh
Or mighty elephants of war
Is the man who had mastered himself.

자기 자신을 정복한 사람은
노새보다 신드 지방의 준마보다
전쟁터의 코끼리보다 더 나은 사람.

Not on their backs
Can he reach the untrodden country.
But only on his own.
등에 짊어진 짐이 없어야
인적이 닿지 않은 나라에도 다다를 수 있으리.
진정으로 자신의 것인 것만이
(그 나라에 다다를 수 있으리.)

The mighty elephant Dhanapalaka
Is wild when he is in rut,
And when bound he will not eat,
Remembering the elephant grove.
힘센 코끼리도
틀에 박힌 생활을 하면 사나워지고
매이면 먹지 않으려 하며,
자신이 살던 숲을 그리워하는데,

The fool is idle.
He eats and he rolls in his sleep
Like a hog in a sty.
And he has to live life over again.
어리석은 사람은 게을러
먹고 잠자리에서 뒹굴기만 하는
마치 더러운 돼지우리 속의 돼지 같으니
그는 거듭 윤회하여 이런 저런 삶을 받게 되리라.

"My own mind used to wander
Wherever pleasure or desire or lust led it.
But now I have it tamed,
I guide it,
As the keeper guides the wild elephant."
Awake.
"내 마음은 이제껏 늘 방황해 왔었네.
쾌락과 욕망과 욕정이 이끌면 그 이끄는 대로.
하지만 나 이제 마음을 길들였으니
나는 마음을 다스리네.
마치 사육사가 야생코끼리를 다스리듯이.

Be the witness of your thoughts.
The elephant hauls himself from the mud.
In the same way drag yourself out of your sloth.
자신의 생각들에 대해 관조(觀照)하라.
늪에 빠진 코끼리가 늪으로부터 자기 몸을 끌어내듯
게으름으로부터 그대 자신을 끌어내라.

If the traveller can find
A virtuous and wise companion
Let him go with him joyfully
And overcome the dangers of the way.
But if you cannot find
Friend or master to go with you,
Travel on alone -
Like a king who has given away his kingdom,
Like an elephant in the forest.
그대 여행자여
지혜롭고 덕이 있는 동반자를 찾았거든
기꺼이 그를 따라 함께 길을 가라.
가는 도중에 어떤 어려움들도 극복해 나아가라.

Travel on alone,
Rather than with a fool for company.
Do not carry with you your mistakes.
Do not carry your cares.
Travel on alone.
Like an elephant in the forest.
어리석은 이와 더불어 길을 가기보다는
차라리 혼자서 길을 떠나라.
그대가 지금까지 저질렀던 잘못도
그대의 근심걱정도 모두다 내려놓고서
숲 속의 한 마리 코끼리처럼
혼자서 길을 떠나라.

To have friends in need is sweet
And to share happiness.
And to have done something good
Before leaving this life is sweet,
And to let go of sorrow.
To be a mother is sweet,
And a father.
It is sweet to live arduously,
And to master yourself.
필요할 때 친구가 있어 즐겁고
나눌 행복이 있어서 즐겁네.
이번 생(生)을 마치기 전에
무언가 좋은 일을 할 수 있어 즐겁고
슬픔으로부터 벗어날 수 있기에 즐겁네
어머니 아버지 살아 계시니 즐겁네
열정적으로 살아가니 즐겁고
자기 자신의 주인으로 살아가니 즐겁네.

O how sweet it is to enjoy life,
Living in honesty and strength!
And wisdom is sweet,
And freedom.
오, 얼마나 즐거운가.
정직하고 힘차게 살아가면서
삶을 누린다는 것은.
지혜는 얼마나 향기로운가.
그리고 자유는
또 얼마나 향기로운가.
