Do not live in the world,
In distraction and false dreams.
Outside the dharma.
흐트러진 마음과 그릇된 꿈으로
이 세상을 대충대충 살지 말라.
그것은 바른 법에서 벗어난 것이다.

Arise and watch.
Follow the way joyfully
Through this world and beyond.
깨어 일어나 주시(注視)하라.
행복한 마음으로이 길을 따라가라.
이 세상에서 저 세상 끝까지

Follow the way of virtue.
Follow the way joyfully
Through this world and on beyond!
선행(善行)의 길을 따라가라.
행복한 마음으로이 길을 따라가라.
이 세상에서 저 세상 끝까지!

For consider the world -
A bubble, a mirage.
See the world as it is,
And death shall overlook you.
이 세상을 물거품이나 신기루 같은 환상으로 생각하라.
그렇게 세상을 보면
죽음도 그대를 못보고 지나치리라.

Come, consider the world,
A painted chariot for kings,
A trap for fools.
와서, 이 세상에 대해 곰곰이 생각해 보라.
각양각색으로 꾸민 왕의 수레 같은
어리석은 이들을 위한 덫인 이 세상에 대해.

But he who sees goes free.
As the moon slips from behind a cloud
And shines,
So the master comes out from behind his ignorance
And shines.
하지만 이 세상이 환상임을 보는 자는 자유로워지리니
구름에 가리웠던 달이 드러나면서
빛을 발하듯
자신의 무지로부터 벗어난 주인된 자는
빛을 발한다.

The world is in darkness.
How few have eyes to see!
How few the birds
Who escape the net and fly to heaven!
이 세상이 어둠이라는 것을
알아보는 눈을 가진 자는 얼마나 드문가!
그물을 탈출하여 하늘을 향해 날아가는
새는 얼마나 드문가!

Swans rise and fly toward the sun.
What magic!
So do the pure conquer the armies of illusion
And rise and fly.
떨쳐 일어나 태양을 향해 날아가는 백조들은
얼마나 아름다운가!
그러니 그와 같은 순수함으로 유혹하는 환상의 무리를 이겨내고
떨쳐 일어나 날아 오르라.

If you scoff at heaven
And violate the dharma,
If your words are lies,
Where will your mischief end?
만일 그대가 하늘을 조롱하고
바른 법을 어기며
말로서 거짓말을 일삼는다면
그대의 악은 어디쯤에서 끝날까?

The fool laughs at generosity.
The miser cannot enter heaven.
But the master finds joy in giving
And happiness is his reward.
어리석은 이는관대함을 비웃고
베풀지 않는 자는 하늘나라에 들어가지 못하지만
주인된 사람은 베푸는 것에서 기쁨을 발견하나니
행복이 그에게 주어지는 보상이라.

And more -
For greater than all the joys
Of heaven and earth,
Greater still and than dominion
Over all the worlds,
Is the joy of reaching the stream.
그리고 더 나아가
하늘과 땅의 모든 기쁨보다 더 크고
온 세상을 다스리는 것보다
더 만족스러운 것이 있으니
그것은 빛줄기에이르는 기쁨이라네
